Title: More anti 4x4 propaganda on the BBC
Post by: Wolfie on November 24, 2005, 11:37:15
Sometime during the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 this afternoon, 12 'til 2.
There is a vote on the Radio 2 website Should 4x4s Be Banned From Cities? (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/vine/)
I'm expecting the usual ill informed nonsense.

Regards

Andy

I have voted 'no' btw and will be looking forward to the debate.

I don't think we should be prejudging the debate before it happens.  The BBC prides itself on its balanced and fair view, let's wait and see what is said.

The ironic thing is the 1st topic is about winter weather. No one needs a 4x4 (in the city or otherwise) when it snows now do they ?

Not that it would make too much difference. The Goverment no longer represent, more state what the country wants.

Seems to be moving a bit now

Agreed, at the mo, things are going to be interesting to see how people go on.

My mate is getting a regular stream of breakdowns and half the time I go out with the disco to sort them out, no complaints yet though

I e-mailed before the show began:
Quote
Dear Jeremy

Are you a member of the Urban alliance against 4 x 4's? You seem to give them, and their ilk plenty of free pubicity, with very little opportunity for those of us who drive 4 wheel drive vehicles an opportunity to redress the balance. It gets pretty tiresome, hearing all the same hackneyed arguments trotted out time after time.

Yes I drive a Land Rover

Yes it is my ONLY vehicle

Yes I use it off road as my 'hobby' as well as my family car

Yes it is MY choice WHAT type of vehicle I drive

My car is 14 years old, a diesel engined vehicle; it does approximately 30 mpg: more than many 2 WD cars.

The majority of pollution caused by motor cars is is their PRODUCTION not their running life; thus supposedly 'environmentally friendly' vehicles which only last 5 years (if that) are far more damaging to the environment than any older vehicle, regardless of the number of wheels which have power to them.

70% of all Land Rovers produced are STILL on the road; and thay have been made since 1948, how many "smart cars" will still be in use when they are over 50 years old??

The arguments and figures used by these anti 4x4 groups are not even factual; they are figures from the USA, using "SUV's many of which are not available to buy in the UK

Bad drivers are dangerous, it does not matter what vehicle they are in.

If these people want to do something to help humanity, I suggest they go and do some voluntary work in the third world (as I have done) or campaign for a higher standard of driving in the UK.

I also suggest you take a look at http://www.4x4prejudice.org/ this site gives a balanced view of the prejudice we put up with from 'do-gooders' who could benefit the world and their fellow man from more constructive use of their, clearly abundant, free time!

Please feel free to call me if you would like me to contribute further to the discussion."

a bit badly constructed I know, but hey, I was in a rush!!

Hmm, no calls yet..... Not holding my breath!!

Apart for Jeremy's personal view on bull bars, was it that bad a debate?  Both sides were represented.  Well done Ash.

As little as I think that there is any real basis for the anti argument, you have to respect that they too are very passionate about the issue.

interesting comment she made about relative size of vehicles in a crash.

As we cannot ban lorries, buses etc then we should start a campaign to remove all cars that weigh less than 1500kg from the road and help with safety

hmm, the voting suddenly gained 4,000 'yes' votes between one person voting and seeing the result, looks like someone's hacked it!! Typical, level playing field? I think not! (Good thing we got 4WD  )

Oh, I've invited Jezza to have me on for a face to face with Sian, see how she likes REAL facts??
Will he reply

Sounds like it was fun though.
Well done Ash for getting on.

Talking of road tax for a moment.
If they want to make the tax on 4x4's £2000, that wont be very fair.
Our 7.5 tonne trucks only pay £165 per year, dig the road up a lot worse that a 4x4 , run twice as bad (smoke clouds) and take up twice as much room as you average 4x4.
Silly, un-thought out arguement.
That would meen trucks would have to pay £4000 for a 17 tonne and £100,000 for an artic per year.
hmm, cant see that somehow.
Look at the ruckus the trucks did last time the road tax was raised and the fuel tax was raised.
Blocked motorways and London to a stand still.

Bring the country to its knees........it will!!
