FORMER RALLY CHAMPION BURNS DIES
Former world rally champion Richard Burns has died after a long battle with a brain tumour, aged 34.

Burns, the only Englishman to win the championship, underwent brain surgery to remove a tumour in April but died on Friday with his close family and friends at his bedside.

Burns' last race was in 2003 while leading the championship. He was forced to stop racing after passing out at the wheel of his car while travelling to the Wales Rally GB.

Burns won the championship in 2001 and enjoyed numerous battles with his rival Colin McRae, the only other Briton to win the world rally championship.

An official statement released today said: "From the outset Richard knew that the odds were heavily against him and yet he fought his illness with bravery and good humour. Having undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy he was able to leave hospital in summer 2004.

"For a while his health showed signs of improvement but then after six months it once again began to decline. Determined not to give up, he opted for surgery earlier this year. This alleviated some of the symptoms of his illness and enabled him to remain active.

"At Castle Combe in August he attended a parade of the rally cars that he drove throughout his career and was touched by the warmth of the reception he received. However there was to be no miracle and in recent days he lapsed into a coma.

"The date of a memorial service will be announced shortly."

RIP Richard...

I knew he wasn't at all well, but you are never prepared for someone to die at 34, whether you know them or not.

I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing his family strength in the difficult times ahead.

A Great Loss To the World of Rallying

That's sad news.
Being a Colin McRae fan Richard was always seen by me to be "the enemy" and there was always cause for worry that he'd beat Colin. He was a brilliant driver and it's such a sad loss and he'll more than likely barely get a mention in front of George Best in the news.

Don't miss that 90 left over jump just before the gates Richard.

RIP

i found out about this just after he passed away this morning,

he will be missed & as a mcrae fan he was the man to beat at every event,
sadly due to not going to rally Gb for recovery ment than i never seen him in action when he was in his prime driving for scooby/pugeot & mitsibishi,

my thoughts go out to his family & friends as this is now a low point in the sport of rallying

Saw it on the news this morning, a sad loss.
Now it needs the WRC teams to get together & organise a 'Burns/Parks' memorial trophy for young drivers.

It's been a sad year for rallying as two great British bastions of the sport have lost their lives; although both in different circumstances, it dimishes the sadness of neither.

Richard Burns always came across as a pragmatic and analytical in the car, but affable and kind out of it. I remember the in car footage as he clinched the World Championship. He grabed Robert Reids hand and just shouted 'Well done mate, you're the best in the world!'.

You are. Not 'I am' or 'We are' - his first thought at that most emotive of moments was for other people. I believe that this was how he lived his life.

The world might not give this man a minutes silence, but I certainly will.

cheers

He wasn't my favourite driver but you cannot question his undeniable talent and only English World Champion.
It's a tragic loss for one so young. He'll be long remembered.

Spare a thought for Marko Martin-he was in car when Burns passed out at wheel at the discovery of his illness and then Beefy-not the best of yrs for him either.
