Would there be any interest in a 4x4 holiday next summer, somewhere in Europe?
Anything from a long weekend to a 1 or 2 week jobby!
Post your thoughts, interest, etc here :D
-
Yup
Assuming we've sold the house in Kent, & that SWMBO has had an op she's waiting for.
I was gobsmacked the other day when I suggested the other day that we could go around the world in the 2A and she took the suggestion well!!
-
I owuld certainly be intrested, any ideas on destination? If the Alps then i needs to be a week at least just for the traveling, with the V8 i could do with finding work along the way just for the fuel bill!!!
-
i was looking into going norway in august up to the arctic circle to tromso, camping along the way. the ferry from newcastle to burgen cost £350 for four with cabin and thats with a landy 109.

It's completely open at the moment!
Obviously, a long weekend would need to be somewhere in Northern Europe. As you say, to do the Alps, it needs to be a week if not two.
The first thing I wanted to do was guage interest and start a bit of discussion. The fine tuning and decision making can come later! Of course, it doesn't have to be just one trip!?
-
I was discussing a Norway trip last year . Great as wild comping is legal and the temperatures arent too bad. Fuel also costs less than here(no surprise) and general living expenses are ok. Crime is also no problem in Scandinavia.
Tromso is just over 1000 miles from Bergen so not too far, as Chamonix is about 550.Definatly looking at a fortnight .
Anyone mention kids? I understand some people dont want them around as they can be a pain but I would need to take mine.

Well, I've got 3 (6, 4 & 2 yr old) - and if I go, they go  Possibly the wife too
Norway / arctic circle sounds like an interesting option - what's the weather & temp like during August?
If it's the main 2 week holiday rather than a long weekend type, then I would want a mixture of driving (off road?) and site seeing, etc. Our 2 week holiday to the Alps this year was good, but moving/driving most days was a bit hard with the kids!
As an alternative and/or a long weekend - I have seen/read about an off-road place in France which includes driving in caves! Does that ring any bells with anyone?

Ah yes, this is what I had seen before http://www.mudplug.co.uk/5pillarsweekends.html :)

we have been looking at options.
Battlefield tour of northern france
Alps
French 'RAID' with BOAR
North sea curcuit (Norway>sweden>denmark>holland>belgium>france)
Morocco
Northern spain (cider country :!: and mountains)
even toyed with the idea of Russia (deasil is aparently under 15p a litre, pity we would be going in the V8)
We are tied to the main school holidays due to work.

The cave driving one is about 2 hours drive from Calais...but i think discos are too tall..mine certainly is. I think there was an advert for a challenge event there in one of the mags.I will try to dig it out.
A few days in 1 place is a good idea with kids, mine will be 5 and 3 in August. The further north you go the colder but Tromso is inside the Artic circle and still about 10 degrees in August. As you come south it is as warm as the uk ...if you head into Swenden its slightly warmer.
-
heya gord's. think Gayn and I would be interested. Long breaks as with others need school holidays, but a long weekend to sample some french delights sounds just as exciting!
you must have had some ideal in mind :)
-
Sounds interesting.
It would be the usual family of five.
watching with interest at the moment.
:D
-
yes. sounds interesting, I would bring my 5 year old lad with me. He'd love it and he's landy nutz.
-
OK, so far it's very clear that it would be a family event with children of all ages welcome :)
Northern Spain could be good - supposed to be good driving in the Pyrenees Mountains! Would definitely have to be for 2 weeks. An alternative might be the Picos de Europa Mountains.
The Arctic Circle also sounded good - I know nothing about it, so any extra info would be good.

That's possibly true, but it looks like it's a very good course. I think you can hire it out, but I'm not sure on costs or numbers of cars required.
Anyone have any ideas for a weekend jaunt?
-
bob 696 mentioned the boab french raid. perhaps we could find one of the routes they use. Road book journey with nice wines and big big bbq and camp site schenanagans. theres certainly a few off road sites of interest out there, so have a base camp near by to save all the unpacking and packing?

Gords, appart from me and the mrs, most of our club went to 'the 5 pillars' on the way home from Belgium and stayed an extra night. The comments were...the cave are really spooky, low ceilings in places but not challenging in terms of off-roading, easy to drive just a bit tight in places. The outside section is vast and is used by many different clubs so a lot of the sections are deeply rutted where the 35" Simex's have been through, on a bad day I was told the site would be very, very challenging indeed. As I said, not my 1st hand experience but thats what a few from our club said.

Tufftee's watching with interest 2? 8)
Thinking Maybe Croatia?
-
There's been a lot of press recently about Northern France short breaks and they seem interesting, easy to arrange and affordable. Maybe we could get a better 'group' deal if we could get enough interest
Put me down as definitely interested
Cheers
Phil

Yes, that's definitely worth looking into. If anyone has any info on such things, please post here :)

specalist 'greenlaning' holidays I have found are by
mudplug, around £1k for a car and 2 people, includes 6 nights hotel and meals and ferry but they are not advertising any dates in the summer holidays
BOAB ( http://www.boab.biz ) £580 Car plus 2 people mixed hotel camping and gite<sp?> but does not include ferry. One date listed in the summer holiday.
Both offer discounts to clubs according to their websites.
-
Looks like we are going for the BOAB option. We will ring up in the next few days. If anyone else is interested we can ask about a group/club discount.
-
we're contemplating the BOAB route, i e-mailed to see if he would sell the road book as few of the dates seem to be school holidays.
also www.WORLD4X4.co.uk with robb pritchard are quite cost effective, and he will do a good discount (33%?) for groups. very good if considering russia, or croatia but sure he goes elsewhere asswell.
long and short, were up for weekenders week or fortnight. Just wanna go somewhere with mix of routes, sample the local culture, switch off, share good company and preferably drink wine
-
PLANNING A 4 WEEK TRIP DOWN THROUGH FRANCE, SPAIN TO MOROCCO IN OCTOBER ,2006 IN MY DISCO ANOTHER DISCO OWNER(FAT VIC). ALSO INTERESTED.
-
I went offroading in france may 03 and it was brill, our campsite was opposite the offroad course and miles from anywhere so we could be as noisey as we wanted! 8)
was quite cheap as we got a group ferry deal and the food out there is cheap anyway, so we had mega bbqs followed by cream cakes, yum! :)

These both look very interesting :) We'll have to have a chat when we meet in Feb

to see if he would sell the road book
If you are still thinking of France, then I have a few french roadbooks, they are mostly tulip diagrams like in TOR, can't say if they are any good (haven't driven them). If you like I can sort them out for you and bring them to our next pub meet (Wed 1st Feb) which I assume is before
We'll have to have a chat when we meet in Feb
Let me know if you want them any sooner

If you go down in to the pyrenees and are making it a family holiday I suggest you make it at least 2 weeks and ideally more. There is plenty to see and do and if you make it anything less than a fortnight you will find the "family" will need a holiday to get over it.
-
to whet your appetite here's some pics of this years trip ......... 3000 miles in 4 weeks.
-
more
-
again......
-
If you want to go somewhere a little different and not quite so far down France the Ardeche is wonderful........
-
And the Alps........
-
Went to Norway last August and the weather was great, I've been a few times and have some family in Bergen. Unfortunatly I didnt take the landy with me.
Weather in the summer is fine, comparable to the UK. Its just the spring and Autumn that are more wintery than here and of course the winters are very cold - the sea in the harbour in Bergen froze last week!
Just bear in mind that if you like the odd drink or two then Norway could prove expensive!

Could? I went there on business a few years back and the drinks bill was more than the hotel bill!

I do like the idea of going to the Pyrenees :)
We would do 2 weeks for that sort of trip (possibly and extra day or two). Did you drive down through France or catch the ferry (Bilbao)?
What did you do when you got there? Have a few bases and drive out each day? Travel by day, camp, move on the next day?
We did French/Italian Alps last year with a tour company (Atlas Overland)!
-
Sparkes - last year in some bars I paid upto £9 for a pint!

We did dover / calais and then down to the Ardeche in one hit; took about 9 hours. You could stop at Macon which is just between Dijon and Lyon and then you could do the rest down to the Pyrenees the next day. It's a tough 2 days but worth it once you ae there.
We had 4 weeks this August and went; Ardeche, Avignon, Perpignan, Pyrenees, Languedoc, Pays Cathar, Carcassonne, Normandie and Calais. It was fantastic. We camped for the 4 weeks but must have had 7 or 8 camps over the period.
Was it Dave and Fiona from Atlas?
-
Was it Dave and Fiona from Atlas?
Fiona didn't come on that tour - it was led by Pete with Dave supporting.
I'd love to do their Pyrenees tour, but the thought of moving nearly every day puts me off. Not so much the moving, but it's difficult with young children! Maybe when the're actually old enough to help, rather than hinder
If we do a touring style holiday this year, the timetable will need to be very "relaxed" :D

Yes, that's the best way. We had an idea of places we might like to go, but the whole thing was very loose. If we wanted to stay somewhere we did. The thing is about France is that there are so many campsites you never really need book. You can always find one, and they're pretty much all nice once you get south of Dijon.
-
I did the Morocco trip a few years ago, through Spain and across Morocco spent nearly 4 weeks doing this, would love to do some thing similar again
