Girlfriend borrowed the Discovery today, just phoned to say she can't get used to having to wave at other Land Rover users. Apparently a 'kitted out' Defender towing Xmas trees just went past with someone waving frantically and she thought something must be up with the car. That's until she remembered that she was in my car and that, as she puts it...........
'it's a Land Rover thing!' :)
-
It must have been because the girlfriend was driving the Disco  , it's very rare you get a wave from other Disco drivers let alone drivers of Defender's (that is unless you're mud-club badged)
-
with pick ups its usually a quick scowl, particularly if you have the biggest wheels/most spotlights
-
I agree Disc drivers unless there into 4x4 dont generally wave at each other ,lets all start, it ll make a lot of people happy, ...........
BUT i guess they were just oggling your BIRD.
-
I'm always waving at folk. Most other disco drivers (if they notice) seem to think I'm a wierdo.
Ah well, their probably right.......
-
Very good point!!! all the farmers out my way give the weirdest of looks!
and the disco,s are normally to clean to be mud clubbers!
think the most miserable group tho have to be the p38 crowd!!
-
I usually get a wave from other Series or Defender drivers - very rarely from Disco or RaRos though
-
i used to wave at all landy's but it is rare a disco driver waved back, so now i only wave at a kitted disco....
Cheers
-
It's a bit of a mixed bag as you state.
Series/90/110/Defender drivers usually wave unless it's a Public Utility vehicle (or military  )
Discovery drivers :? Unless it's obviously modified, muddy, or otherwide recognisable as a lunatic (sorry; enthusiast) you'll have to take 'pot-luck' with a wave.
From past experience the friendliest waves are between 101FC owners, as there's so (comparatively) few of them
-
Richard's spot on here. It has to be an enthusiast or the odd person who just waves back in case they really know you but are not sure.
The older the landy the more chance. No possibilities with farmers, people who drive landies for their work (they don't know how lucky they are!!) or drivers of Range Rovers (especially sports).
I've kinda worked this out through my errors and being laughed by the wife when I've waved at someone who proceeds to look at me as if I'm an imbecile.
The best thing is when I'm out in her Clio and I'm still waving at Landy drivers!!! That confuses em.

Ahhh, what's new??
I got worried a while ago when some weirdo on a Quad (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=12441) waved at me on the A64
-
I've been driving the Battle Bus for a week and apart from a couple of displays of totally unexpected courtesy from a Mercedes on the A1 and a Mini on the A619 I have been totally ignored so far. I waved to a Disco yesterday (the rest of the time I'm trying not to crash as I'm not used to the steering yet) and he didn't wave back. I thought 'up yours mate' and continued on my merry(???) way to work. (The RR looks great in the car park next to all the BMW X5s   .) But having read the above, I don't feel so alone now.
-
As a disco driver lol i always wave back ......
-
i always wave my fiance rekons im weird but she knew that anyway
i get more waves from 90's etc and a few odd waves from from disco's but most round here are on the school run duties. joe

Around here (Shropshire/Mid Wales border) there is quite a mix made up of farmers, off roaders, and school runners. I always wave at anyone with a 'prep'd' vehicle (it's pretty obvious with most). Sadly no disco driver has ever reciprocated, it is always the Defender, 90, or Rangie driver.
I still think given time that will change. I used to drive a moggy van and just about every other Morris minor driver would give a friendly wave as they passed.
-

I'd go even further and say I ONLY wave at modded vehicles, many people are buying 4x4's as a family car, and don't understand the wave.
Sadly no disco driver has ever reciprocated
WAVE AT ME

Round my way you got to be observant to see the farmers wave, they do it though. They just lift a finger from the steering wheel without looking at you or anything. Took me a while to notice it now I try to return the favour.

That's known as a 'Yorkshire Wave'.
It takes little expenditure of energy, is understated (we're not given to exhibitionism) & says a lot by saying a little.
-
i allways wave at landys, disco and classic range rovers the newer ones p38 up never wave proberly scared to take their hands off the steering wheel incase something brakes

My little sisters boyfriend's just bought a RR Sport. It's the first Landy he's ever owned, so I've been trying to instruct him in the ways of the "Landrover owner". So there should be at least one RR Sport waving like F...... in South Yorkshire.

It's simply the merest lift of an index finger off the steering wheel, maybe half-an-inch. If they really want to acknowledge you, they'll nod their head

That is know to me as the North Yorkshire wave. My Mate up there does it.

When out in my Series 1 I very often get a wave even from the far east imports. In the Disco it's a different story unless it's another enthusiat. I have even gone to work one day in the Series and got a wave, but the next dayin the Disco the same driver will totaly blank you out even if I wave first. :(
-
You daren't wave back in a series.
It'll be of the road before ou know it
I had someone waving to me and flashing their lights near Whaddon when they were on their way to Whaddon.
I felt really guilty when SWTSMBO took time out during our domestic to point out they'd flashed and waved.
She really knows how to hit below the belt
-
he didn't wave back. I thought 'up yours mate'
so that's who gave me the 2 finger salute!!! joke!
seriously though i wave at ALL 4x4 drivers (don't usually get a response though) and i'm only usually a passenger (must find a driving school that uses LR's!)
-
must find a driving school that uses LR's!
Now there's a business opportunity if I ever saw one  Combined on road and off road tuition!
-
Yours would be the ideal motor for it as well!!! plenty of grunt and plenty of height!

I'll keep an eye out for him. :D
