Title: Computer Question
Post by: RedDisco on December 02, 2005, 14:44:32
Why does it keep disconecting, although still shows as connected. Won't re-connect without re-starting.

Freeserve Broadband.

Sorry about lack of details, but won't stay connected for long enough !

Any ideas please, it's driving me mad.

Could be anything !

Is your PC hardwired to your modem/router or wireless ?
Does your BT line come into the house overhead or underground ?
Try making a phone call - does it cut in and out ?

It could be something as simple as your BT line has gone belly up, or perhaps Freeserve are having probs, or you're at the limit of your wireless coverage...............

Check the USB connection. It may be slightly loose or bent.
It happened to me once, one of my daughters had placed something on top of the connector where it goes in to the computer.

Yes it is hardwired, the BT line comes in overhead and there are no probs with the phone line at all. It seems to be worse if you stay on one page for too long, you move to the next and get the 'web page unavailable' message and thats it, can't get anything else although it is still showing as connected. You then disconnect, but can't reconnect again without re-starting.

the frozen machine and dropping connection suggests driver issue

although it may be that the machine has quite a bit installed or is indeed a host to a trojan killing the connection

any host of questions need answering before this can be fixed at a guess.

Modem or router? I replaced my router when this started happening to me. Sorted.

Thought I try the easy one first, so I just nipped the USB connection up a bit, plugged it back in and 'Hey Presto' hasn't been down for the last 3 hrs, fingers crossed now it will be OK.

So thanks very much for all help and advice    :D

I had the same symptoms for nearly 2 weeks before I physically checked the connections.
I have had no problems since.
