Does the fact that I have no chrome left on my stearing swiv's mean I will have to replace front axle???
Mot wise and safety wise...
It might be more economical to buy another SJ at the rate this rebuild is going.

mine leek water after playing.. have invested in a grease gun (£12.99 from unipart) :wink:

You can buy the swivels separately and unless the seals are leak oil/grease it won't affect the MOT.
Try Paddocks or John Craddocks for prices, they're possibly the cheapest.

pack em with moly grease and keep driving.
If you want to get tricky, take out the filler plug, drill and tap to take a grease nipple and pump em um with grease periodically, or after playing in deep water.

Well the wifes Vit has driveshafts with CV joints on the front and I presumed the SJ would be the same :P . Thought prowler was talking about a LR axle :? Also I thought he meant buying a SJ as it would be cheaper than repairing a LR, but I could be wrong :wink:

AFAIK even on a zook the swivels can be replaced on their own the bits if they're owt like a disco they will be awkward to get to all the bolts and stuff but once the bits are out of the way it's quite a straight-forward job and also somewhat therapeutic (despite most knuckles being skinned) but do please remember that if your vehicle is over 10 years old have a set of bearings for each front wheel spare...we didn't and ended up waiting 3 days for replacements :D

My friends and I did the Swivel joins on my SIII earlier this year. It took 2 Saturdays, and a lot of stress, mostly due to dificulties with pressing in the pin bearings.
Theoretiacally if you have all the bits ready it should take about 4 Hours per swivel, but things always go wrong (won't fit, won't come apart etc). We concluded that if we ever need to do swivels again, we will get a new front Axel.

sounds likes you had problems there, we had problems as well after removing the disk we found that the wheel bearings had collapsed and stuck themselves to the halfshaft so had to wait 3 days for more parts to arrive then we got them and found out we'd forgotten to get thread lock so called a couple of favours in and asked a friend to pick us some up turns out he didn't know where to get it from so he got it from sainsbury's(!!!) when he got here he'd got us a tube of LocTite superglue because it said "Sticks Metal" on the back!
anyway eventually sorted it out and whilst putting the brakes back on the brake pipe fractured so more cursing ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) anyway everything was done in the end and it's really made a difference to the steering...that put aside i've still got to do my dad's mate's swivels on his motor (another Disco, also a MC member "lordofthestrings") hehe at least it's got a V8 and a gorgeous exhaust note :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

NO, the swivels are welded into the axle, like toyota axles.
They cant be replaced.
Grease em, ignore em!

Yep Mine did the same, I forgot that. Add another Saturday to the Total time.
As for the thread, I had missed the fact that it was a Susuki :oops:

No bodywork on Suzuki, so easy to get at axle/bolts etc.
Should have known they would be welded units, but not to worry, there is a very good bearing supply store in Huntingdon [ WOLF ENGINEERING ]
I get all my Motorcycle bearings from them.
As for the grease nipple idea [ are we allowed to say nipple on here ] I have a fair supply of them so will do that when I get round to it, will also Scotchbrite the swivs before putting back together.
