Title: Clutch going need advice
Post by: jnoshea on December 13, 2005, 13:35:23
First let me describe the symptoms in case I'm wrong but I really think my clutch is about to give out:

When very cold pressing the clutch leads to a load dry scraping noise related to engine revs. Even when warm, if I depress the clutch pedal just a little bit (not enough to release the clutch) there is the same dry scraping noise. When driving, I can get the scraping noise to happen again by giving it some serious throttle.  Pulling away from lights seems to give a juddering now which is getting worse by the hour, doesn't happen every time, but most of the time. When changing down a gear from higher revs the car seems to rock back and forth (this one is hard to describe) and the same when pulling away from a roundabout.  The rocking has been happening for a while but the noise is very recent.  So what do you think, is the clutch about to give in?

Can anyone recommend a good garage in the Nottingham area to get the clutch changed?

JUst had a quote for £410 and they can do it early next week.
Is this a good price?

Not sure, haven't had one go, I usually use a local garage near me, but it would be a bit far for you.

Yu could try:

JP 4x4 in Skegby (John) http://www.jp4x4.co.uk/ 01623 559833

or

Tonks 4x4 in Huthwaite http://www.tonks4x4.com/ 01623 452885

Neither are particularly local, but specialise so should know what they are doing

Try Ashcrofts, in Luton - not totally local but not a disaster.

Make sure you get a 'three piece clutch' i.e. pressure plate, fly wheel and release bearing - Valeo and Borg & Beck seem to be the names to trust.
Also make sure they replace the fork as this is prone to wearing through on the pivot point - if you're 'going in' to do any of these jobs it is far more cost effective to do all four at once.

I think somewhere in the region of 200-250 supplied and fitted is a reasonable price as long as it is a reputable installer.

Thanks Chris, good point.  For that reason I've decided not to mess around and I've booked the car into Famous Four's workshop for Monday morning at a cost of around £330 to get it done.

Good man, Famous Fours mechanics are good, and if Jamie Beet is still there then say hello to him, he is one hell of an off roader and is generally a damned decent bloke!

The first few symptoms sound like a release bearing, have yo been wading at all?  The juddering is not necessarily the same thing, clutch slipping is another matter, is it slipping in high gears? try a rough gear change and see if it holds or slips.

Not been wading. Juddering and slipping is only noticable in the low gears. Scraping noise happens on all gears if I give it a lot of throttle.  I'll try some rough gear changes in the morning and let you know, although if there is a problem with the release bearing that still means a clutch change doesn't it so if the clutch plate is also worn then that will get sorted at the same time? I guess the guys at famous four will test drive it before they start the job too.

That juddering might be your hand brake not releasing properly.

Mine has been doing the dry scraping noise also  now for a fair while now too  and ive put down to due to getting stuck in the mud at whaddon as it didnt do it b4 even though i have done a fair share of wading. Some days its really prominant other days I bearly notice it so far the only problems its caused is the funny looks i get when it dip the clutch lol

The guys at Famous Four in Louth were brilliant today.  Good price, the clutch is smooth as silk now, and the workshop manager even dropped me off in the town to have a look around while they did the job.  Not much to see in Louth though  :?

Isn't the gearbox the same unit as the RRC? if so why don't people fit the cast arm that ours has fitted? it's sufficiantly over-engineered for the job
