I was reading a book about the Indian monsoon recently, and read about a great trick:
There's a road in a city (might have been Bombay, can't remember for sure) where there's a straight level road with a big dip in it. The dip fills up with water to quite a deep level.
So the local kids get together, and build a pile of bricks in the middle of it. One of them stands on the bricks and waits for a car to come along...
...and the driver thinks, that can't be too deep, the kid's standing in it OK...
And when the driver's up to his bonnet in the water, the kids tow his car out, for a fee
The book's called Chasing the Monsoon, by Alexander Frater.

Yeah, but it'd take me a bucket full of WD40 to get everything working again! I'm just getting used to fording in a V8 after years of charging through with gay abandon in diesels.
