Title: Gear Box!!
Post by: paul_humphreys on December 18, 2005, 15:56:34
I think I have broke my gearbox. I have a RRC with a 4 speed box. I pulled a 110 out of a hole 2 weeks ago, on the way home the box would lose all drive on over-run. Out in it today and the box kept loseing drive. I could get drive back by stoping and trying all gears. Could this be the clutch or the transfur box?

Also I can get hold of a LT230, well I know the 230 is right. Will this fit the 4 speed box if the transfur box has gone. Will I have to change the pops if it fits.

If all this is a balls up then I can get a whole RRC with VM2.4TD in and a 5 speed box.

right:

the rangie 4 speed box has the transfer box built into the back of the gearbox,u need to either swap the whole thing or you can rebuild the Tbox in place (did the centre diff on mine outside on a crappy day as it had exploded & locked up)

i have no idea if a 5 speed box is a straight swap,i hope it is cos i have a rangie 4 speed in my v8 90 & have been offerd a 5 speeder quite cheap

I know you need to move the gearbox mount on the one side, not sure if it needs drifrent gearbox cross member.

By the way, my gear box dose not have a diff lock, it has a LSD in the gear box.

John, I through they did not put the viscous coupling in a 4 speed manual box? I know there something in there as it will drive with the front prop removed. My RRC was assembled in South Africa from a kit.

I will take it down to LEGS tomorrow to get told whats wrong and how much to fix. I might just change the compleat box for now.

<Expletive deleted>,you have a dead rare box

my dad had one & it blew up & he fitted a standard box, what age exactly of rangie do you have??

if its 71-72 it prob will have a LSD for the centre diff,

if its a 85-onwards manual/auto it might have a borgwarner Tbox which has a viscous coupling

ahhh, i did have a lsd in the center diff in one of mine! that was a 71, but i ripped it appart in the woods and replaced it with a new one, they have a series of plates to fill up where the lsd went,
i see where your comeing from, didnt they stop it because it was costing too much? and it did work very well, untill it selfdestructed!!

Its a 1980 but as I said it was put togeather in South Africa, so it could be anything in there. I do know it will drive with no front prop on as when the UJs on the front prop were done it was driven around with just the back prop on. So something must be locking the diff?

when the centre diff went bang on mine, there was just a manged mess of bits, and that was holding it in 4wd, jus makeing loud clunting noised now and again and looseing drive but then would clunt and move again, that may be what it is then!!

Well that sounds just like mine!!!

Mike, thats what i ment in the transfur box, the LSD. Th 4 speed box is all one unit I beleve?

yes, it is all one unit, all cast in one peice, so either get hold of a new centre diff if it needs thatof replace the lot!, i had it hung off of a 6 cylinder 5.5ltre perkins desil so i found the 4speed to be the strongest and most reliable so i got a new standard centre diff, and it worked, but i do like the 5speed for the extra gearing you have on the road.

the rangie 4 speed is a 1 piece unit although the Tbox can be fixed (centre diff replaced) from undedrneath, just takes a wee bit o patience, not really that hard to do but then i have done a few

BTW the 5 speed box with T-box is bigger than a 4 speed so you will need the tunnel from a later car.  These don't unbolt either so you'll need to be crafty.  They are also weaker than the 4 speed.
