Title: Cold start
Post by: missroadrage on December 19, 2005, 18:48:22
Hi just got my Vitara (Saturday) & when I try to start it from cold it fires up on 1st turn of the key then cuts out. It then just turns over for ages & eventually (5 mins) fires but if I accelerate straight away it cuts out. Feels like no fuel getting through or maybe a non return valve to the tank is failing.
Anyone got any idea what I (my hubby) can try or anywhere I can download tech manual to make repairs easier.

Thanks :(

Does it run ok when it has warmed up? If so probably the auto choke. Sound very much fuel related, could be the fuel pump as has been said. The workshop manuals are hard to come by but haynes manuals are fairly easy to come by but not all that much helpful.

Suzis are pretty simple to be fair you probably won't need one if you have worked on cars before. try cleaning out the carb and having a look at the choke to start with might just be caped in crap. Look at the parts of the choke and check that they are free and not rusted up or anything. Try the fuel filters they may have not been changed and become clogged. then finally have a look at the pump and if it looks wrecked change it.

otherwise take it to a nice local garage (NOT SUZUKI DEALER) and let them have a look its usually something quite simple.

Let me know how it goes...

We have definately come to the conclusion it's the auto choke as once warm it runs beautifully - Thanks people.

Next question where can I get a manual choke conversion kit for a 1992 Vitara :?:

Please help it's drinking the fuel :!:

WE'VE CURED IT. :D
TOOK THE AIR FILTER OFF TO WATCH WHAT THE CHOKE FLAP DOES TO TRY TO NARROW DOWN PROBLEM & FOUND A PIECE OF METAL IN THE CARB HOLDING THE FLAP OPEN. :o
THANK GOD IT WAS SO EASY TO SORT - STARTED FIRST TRIME
