Title: filling station madness
Post by: beast5680 on December 20, 2005, 21:09:33
picture the scene,

I,m filling my van with diesel when a mini comes flying in to the opposite side of the pump and screeches to a halt, the young lady driving attempts to get out of said mini but cant due to the fact she is now too close to the pump to open the door   then...

she climbs over the passenger side and gets out the passenger door and comes round to the pump.......which she cant get out of its holster for the same reason she couldnt open her door   so... she gets back in the passenger door into the drivers seat starts up and zooms out of the filling station and off down the road ](*,)

is it me or is it just silly season :?

When I filled the hybrid up last friday, I couldn't get down the drivers side to the pump, so I put the motor on the pasenger side

Then passed the pump nozzle through the passsenger window, to the military tank under the drivers seat, must admit got some puzzled looks with the hose trailing through the window

have you ever noticed the que for the pumps cos people dont think the hose will stretch round the other side of the car :?  get some good looks when you pull up in the disco with the filler round the opposite side and just get out and pull the hose round

My pet hate is when you need the LPG pump, and even if the garage is otherwise totally empty you can guarantee somebody's chosen that pump to leisurely fill up with Unleaded or Diesel.

Then they wander in to pay, have a coffee, take a relaxing dump whilst reading the paper, all while I'm sitting there right behind them with my engine running and steam coming out of my ears.

My local Tesco station, there are always queues of people waiting to use the pumps on the right hand side of the lane, and nobody at the left hand pumps. So I just pull past the queues and fill up at my leisure, as the pipes on the nozzles are long enough to reach the right hand side of my disco from the left side.

You get used to the stares and silent curses from all the people queing after a while...  :P

If all the pumps on the "right" side are in use, I just pass the queue, spin the Disco round and reverse in, that makes 'em look, the one's that are queuing up just don't have a clue what I'm doing, then they sit there glaring at me whilst I whistle a happy tune.

arent the pipes long enough to stretch across these days?

drive mighty close and you should be fine but the disco is different cos the pipe has to go round the back

and they arent the most maneuverable pipes in the world!

Hi,

even worse is my local sainsburys, depending on which pump you go to, some of them are time limited and i can't fill it in the time allowed - wot sort of squidgy rotbox car only fills up with 35 litres of petrol?  it can take me three goes to put my 85 litres in!!!!!!

I only go to either pump 1 or pump 2!!!!!

Regards

Ela

Yeah, lousy Esso have started limiting pumps to 60l.  Given that I never put in less than about 80l in one go, it's very annoying.

Tip of the day:  put the nozzle back in, wait a mo, and pull it out again - the staff are usually clued up enough to authorise the pump for a second go.  Then at least you can pay for both lots at the same time.

Or use the lorry pump, but the nozzles don't always fit in the tank.

In the days when I had a Range Rover for desert rallying, in addition to the standard tank it had a 120 litre tank (one of those non-exploding fuel cells) built into the load area.

Can you imagine the hassle filling up that beast?

I'm planning on carrying about 200l of jerry cans on the 101 in addition to the 100l tank, plus 120l of LPG, so I've got that to look forward to!

A while back a mate of mine had a 110 with wing-mounted tanks which weren't plumbed in, which he used to hold fuel for other reasons.  So occasionally he'd go in and fill the vehicle with diesel, one tank with Unleaded and one tank with 4 Star, which did tend to puzzle the forecourt staff a little.

Yeah, although I've found a couple of garages who get a bit arsey if you use the truck pump.  Who are they to tell me if I've got a truck or not?  :?  Jobsworths.

I sometimes struggle with the one ton at the local tescos - it has the filler on the rear driver side, but the thing is too long to get the hose to stretch around as you have to park back so as not to hit the car in front. I find its best to go late at night when nobody is about. One thing that nnoys me though is people who go to the pay at pump pumps, and opt to pay at the kiosk! The ought to be shot, they seriously wind me up!

You better check you still have your radio or anything you left in the motor.  Sounds like a distraction burglary tactic to me

My mother-in-law winds me up when the car needs filling (she uses our 'spare')
Despite being a (fairly) intelligent woman & ex-dispensing optician, she invariably has to be accompanied to the forecourt as she, for some reason, cannot figure out that the key needs to be turned in the same direction as the cap unscrews.

Anologies of comparing it to a bottle of Tonic Water (in the way it opens/closes) tend to be forgotten once on the forecourt.

She messes about with it, & either returns or asks a stranger for help.

It's not exactly 'rocket-science' is it??

the pay at pump pumps

These get people through the garages quicker, and save on staff costs, but when they only let me have £60 at a time, how much are they loosing in lost trade?

Another thing that winds me up stupid - the number of people who only put in £5 at a time. Your just creating a queue. Arrrggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Just FILL your D*$M car and get on with it.

I think I've had too much caffine this morning

It's not just pay-at-the-pump pumps which are starting to be limited now.  The idea is to reduce lost payment through driveaways.
