Hi all,
Quick question :- does anyone know what a 5cyl non turbo merc engine in a rangie would be out of :?: & if they are any good :?: ,
Thanks John.
-
I don't claim to kno anything about them, but I've just done a quick google that has suggested the following:
Sprinter 216CDI 156bhp 5 cylinder
Sprinter 316CDI 156bhp 5 cylinder
Sprinter 416CDI 156bhp 5 cylinder
Sprinter 616CDI 156bhp 5 cylinder
So for a quick quess, I'd say it's out of a Sprinter and is 156bhp

any engine numbers to go by?
then u can find out what the engine is and find out its quality from that.
-
if its an old rangie could be out of a 190 car they had 5 cyls as below
Inline 5 cylinder 2.497 litre / 152.4 CID overhead cam Diesel engine
93 hp @ 4,600 RPM
122 ft-lbs @ 2,800 RPM
redline: 5,150 RPM
22.0 : 1 compression ratio
3.43" stroke, 3.31" bore

Does it look anything like this :

If so, then it's the one from the 190D and some of the early g-wagens.
I should probably get round to selling this one actually !
-
look at the musso and korrando for the answer.......strange as i am thinking about this also.
-
non turbo and early r/r money on 308 merc van
-
Could be from a 609 merc,
as fitted to van type minibuses(breadvans in the know  )
-
it cant be a sprinter as its a turbo it is more likely a 308 or up wards cant be a sprinter i think
-
I might be way of course, but check the rotation direction. I once heard a rumour that merc engines ran the other way to most euro and jap angines. Like I said, may be bullsh*@ but Itd be a [!Expletive Deleted!] to have lots of reverse gears...........
-
hi i had a old rangie a few year ago i put a 300d merc engine in that it was allright a bloke i know in leicester does the conversion plate the later merc diesels are all electric controled the g wagon has the 300d fitted
-
That is I am certain a Mercedes OM617 (the number is from memory however) which is the 5 cylinder 2998cc unit from the 80's and earlier. It had many applications and I have a SWB 1988 G Wagon with it in. Quite and completely gutless but will go for ever. In the G application I think it is rated at around 82 bhp and 120 or so ft pounds torque. It was turboed for some vehicles but that version has uprated internals. There is a G club website somewhere which may help if you can find it - I have lost my bookmark.
While the build quality and strength never mind the cross axle diff locks of the G Wagen puts it in a different league to my 300 series Discovery the engine apart from its total reliabilty is rather a let down.
Cheers,
JB

John

Quite a lot of our 'Blue Light' Ambulances are Mercedes, so I'll have a browse the next chance I get.
Plus, we've got the fleet repair workshops in our grounds.
Pity you don't want ainformation about the Gardner 6LW (or is it a 6LX) as the father-in-law was Assistant Engineering Manager (& still has contacts) for Arriva buses around here.
Now he's travelling between depots 'trouble-shooting'
-
now that would be the old ploder gardner 6LX with a very long stroke dont think it will fit in a range rover wivout some mad mod's
