Title: Starter Motor
Post by: joe90 on December 31, 2005, 15:39:24
Just been out to start the series 3, and the starter motor is just whizzing round and not engaging. Whats the best thing to lube em up with.

Also, when i finally got it started and engaged there was a real rattleing noise coming from what appeared to be the top of the engine, but more sever than a tappity noise. (If that makes sense)

if its not one its both of the motors - my disco is in bits too

Sounds like the bendix is not throwing out (mud or general much etc), pop the motor off, spray oil onto the bendix and gearing, good wire brushing up and down round the spirels, and check that it can be wound up freely by hand, as for lubrication clean and dry with a light spray of wd40/duck oil is what I do

Just a thought but could the rattle be a bearing in either water pump or alternator?  When mine 1st started to go I thought it was a top end knock untill it was loud enough to be obvious!  Both alti and water pump are (relatively) cheap.

Cheers,

Mike

well it had a new water pump this year, and an alternator about 18 months ago. My old man said it sounds like a bouncing valve, but i seem to think its coming from the layshaft bearing.

Its only evident at high revs, when idleing it purrs at u
