Title: Roof Light Bars for 300TDi
Post by: Tyke on January 05, 2006, 08:29:42
Anyone point me in the direction of a decent light bar for the Discovery?

Seen quite a few fitted, some home made some shop bought, but not been able to find a supplier.

Cheers guys.

Hiya

Greenlane4x4 (http://www.greenlane4x4.co.uk) do them both supplied with lights, without lights and can do any extra lug fitting before its shipped to you.

There is also a good selection on eBay this one being the cheapest: eBay Link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Discovery-Roof-Spot-light-bar-Land-Rover-NO-LIGHTS_W0QQitemZ4600859690QQcategoryZ31348QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I would avoid square lights that seem to come as standard..they are great at illuminating your dash and bonnet!!

Cheers for that Damo.

Bulli . . . . what you suggest as good lights then with good coverage without lighting up all the front end? Was thinking along the lines of two spots and two fogs.

I have 4 round ring spots, 2 small and 2 large. I have put fogs on my front bumper to give a wide beam.

I like the roof setup Darren has, details on his website (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/stage1v8/TechnicalLighting.htm)

The two center spots straight infront and two small "consumables" i.e. easy and cheap to replace directed down by the front corners.

I love his idea of the aux ports on the roof rack, I wonder was goodies he plugs in there??????

i got mine from greenlane 4x4,i couldn't be happier with it. have only used the lights once in the dark and i have realized they need adjusting. Admittedly they do light up the dash a bit but so what :)

I don't know if it's still an issue but I got a second hand bar and the powder coating was absolutely diabolical - good wire brushing and a couple of coats of Hammerite has sorted it.

If I was to buy one new I'd go for one without the lights and just the tabs so I could bolt my own lights on.

Hissy had a Patriot light bar for Christmas off the lovely Landybabe - I must admit I'm very very impressed with the quality of it and it looks pretty mean too

I know not everyone has luxury of a roof rack but I fitted mine under the front of the rack so they are protected from branches and also set back far enough that the beam just catches the front of the bonnet and they don't reflect off the windscreen.

I've got two Ring 55 watt spots in the middle with Britex twin-bulb floods on the outsides. The spots are wired into the mainbeam with separate switch and the floods can be used with side, dip or main beam, again off a separate switch.

With the floods on I can turn the headlights off and not notice the difference, ideal for seeing the holes on a track if you don't want to blind the driver in front!!  :D

Good camera, stable mount and nice big hard drive!!  :D

Oh, you mean the lights!!

The floods are normally for the rear of tractors and I've got the added light from the 130 Watt Procomp spots on the A-bar.

I found that fogs are okay when positioned low, like on the bumper, but up high they just give you an line of light rather than an all-over coverage of light close to the front of the vehicle. That's why I went for floods instead of fogs.

Here's another couple of screen shots for you.

That's the point though Martin, the flood lights don't blind the guy in front because they have defused lenses and, although bright, the beam doesn't extend much outside the range of your normal dipped headlights.  :D

Over the years have tried many different lights on bars and racks.
Currently have a rear work light and also have fitted 2 worklights on the front of the rack and they are fitted upside down to give easy access to the handles.
They work really well and you can swivel them to light the sides of the motor too if needed.  They are really tough too and totally waterproof. They have individual switches too so you can switch em both on for driving or turn one off and angle it to where the beam is needed for camping, etc.
Can highly reccomend. They were only £18 each too from paddocks.

Forgot to say;
have em wired via a remote control switch from Halfords.

Makes the job real easy and if you want you can take the remote out the vehicle so you can turn the lights on whilst outside the vehicle.
