MY 98 300 TDi AUTO HAS DEVELOPED A PROBLEM.WHEN WARM IT SEEMS TO "MISS",STUTTER,FART ETC WHEN DRIVING. I DON'T THINK ITS AN ENGINE PROBLEM,AS IF YOU SELECT NEUTRAL IT REVS OUT FINE EVERY TIME, SO I'M THINKING GEARBOX
I HAD CHANGED THE OIL ABOUT 8 MONTHS AGO.
HOW SHOULD AUTO OIL SMELL?
MY DISCO HAS A FLY BY WIRE PUMP/THROTTLE    DOES THE GEAR BOX HAVE ANY ELECTRONICS /ECU ETC?
HOW DO AUTO'S KNOW WHEN TO CHANGE?
ONCE WHEN TOWING OUR CARAVAN (1.5 TONS) AROUND SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE(FRI NIGHT 5.30PM......ROUTFINDER ????) THEN UP AROUND THE PEAK DISTRICT, THE GEARBOW TEMP LIGHT CAME ON BUT AFTER PARKING UP FOR 5 MINS IT WAS FINE.

ALSO, HOW MANY TYPES OF AUTO BOXES HAVE LAND ROVER USED :?:

Normally auto box problems reveal themselves in the colour of the oil. It should be a nice clear red colour. It should be a nice clear red colour when you change it too.
Anything else and you have problems. I am not familiar with the landy autobox (even though I wish I had one) but the oil thing applies to all even the strange belt driven ford ones.

HI PETER .
THE OIL IS A NICE CLEAR RED BUT I REMEMBER HEARING SOMTHING ABOUT WHEN IT SMELLS "BURNT " THEN.........?????(CAN'T RECALL THE REST! )
BY THE WAY (RE; YOUR INTERIOR LED,ETC)
I PUT 10W STANDARD BULBS IN MY 1990 DISCO INTERIOR LIGHTS AND THE DIFFERENCE WAS AMAZING.

landrover have used 2,the 3 speed & the 4 speed,if its red 7 doesnt smeel burnt than its ok,if its anything from dark murky red to brown/black the box is scrap as the brake bands have been cooked, seriously u will know the smell straight away if its the bands,
autos kno how to change through the pump speed & governor & also through the valve block,i can explain how the mechanical side works reasonably well but i struggle on the hydrolic side, would have to go n get my college folder out to explain that side of it
