I welded a bracket & bolt to the swing-away wheel carrier, and secured it with wing nuts

This has been covered previously somewhere.... but can't spot it right now!
The only problem with mounting it outside is corrosion if it's left on all the time. Mounted mine along the side of the RH box in the back. A bit more trouble to get at it, but it just sits there all the time and I don't have to keep spraying it with oil.

I lopped 2" off with a grinder and mounted it inside along the wheel arch.

Ah, yes..... forgot about you longitudinally challenged 90 owners
-
If you choose to keep it inside, for gods sake fasten it down REALLY well.
If you ever roll the car, it'll beat the hell out of you.

so wot do i need to make it stay on

in here on the 90
-
Here's mine... well at least before I stripped my 90 in to a 100 bits!!!
Did also have it mounted across the bulkhead when it was a hard top, but when I changed it to a truck cab, spare wheel went on the bulkhead.
Didn't need to cut it down to fit - but it 'just' fitted
Brackets are a standard part avaliable from any HiLift Jack stockist... e.g. Arbil in Coventry, John Craddocks, BLRS etc etc.
