Title: Irony
Post by: gords on January 11, 2006, 16:49:14
From The Free Dictionary (http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/irony):
Quote
Irony is a form of expression in which an implicit meaning is concealed or contradicted by the explicit meaning of the expression. Irony involves the perception that things are not what they are said to be or what they seem.

Umm, clear as mud :?

Read on through the explanations and examples - nope, doesn't help

So, anyone care to take on the challenge of explaining irony to me?

An example of irony without sarcasm would be an understated "not bad", said to someone who has just done something extraordinary and impressive. Both the speaker and the listener hear the literal meaning of "acceptable, but no better", and understand the intended meaning, of strong approval and admiration. They share a perception of irony.

I've been known to do this regarding tough questions at home.
i.e - does this outfit look nice?. Or, How was dinner?
To which i usually reply "yeah, not bad"
I always wonder why i get a funny (nasty) look!!
Maybe i should be more careful with my words.

This Quote is from the Concise Edition Dictionary

Quote
An expression in which the intended meaning of the words is the opposite of their usual sense, An event or result that is the opposite of what is expected.

Is that any clearer?

Ten Thousand spoons when all you need is a knife ....

Although, since that song contains no examples of irony, it is quite ironic in itself.

Of course "raiiiiin on your wedding day" is only ironic if you're marrying the god of clement weather.

Irony is something like "Oh yeah, that Landie will never get stuck" as you watch it sink into the mud bog never to be seen again.

From The Cambridge Dictionary

irony (WRONG RESULT)

a situation in which something which was intended to have a particular result has the opposite or a very different result:
The irony (of it) is that the new tax system will burden those it was intended to help.

irony (FIGURATIVE SPEECH)

a means of expression which suggests a different, usually humorous or angry, meaning for the words used:
Her voice heavy with irony, Simone said, "We're so pleased you were able to stay so long." (= Her voice made it obvious they were not pleased).
Compare sarcasm.

the best example of irony as i understand is a cartoon by a guy called Mike Peyton. i dont know if he still does but he did do cartoons in a magazine called Practical Boat Owner.

imagine the situation, 2 men sat at the back of a boat, each reaching over the back holding on to a wellyboot each.
one says to the other:
Quote
its ironic, he always wore wellies a size too big so he could kick them off if he fell in

it makes more sense if you see it, but i cant find it anywhere

Nope, best example was from Blackadder 2:
Quote
Edmund Blackadder: "You have absolutely no idea what irony is, have you Baldrick?"
Baldrick: "Yes I have. It's just like steely and goldie, 'cept it's made of iron"

Err, no it doesn't apparently, unless you mean this (from The Free Disctionary)... :?

Quote
Among those who assert that the song uses an invalid definition of irony, many find it ironic that Morissette would write a song titled "Ironic" with no actual irony in it. In 2004, Morissette herself stated that "the most ironic thing about 'Ironic' is that it's not filled with ironies" and acknowledged that the song doesn't live up to the definition, which is what makes it ironic.

So, why is that irony and not sarcasm? Isn't sarcasm when you say one thing but your tone of voice makes it obvious that you mean something else (opposite)?
