Title: intercooler upgrade
Post by: Matt_H on January 13, 2006, 20:53:18
Just been thinking about this spare discovery intercooler I have lying around.. Should I ebay it was my main thought, but that got me thinking, I'm into kit cars as well and one of the popular upgrades for my kit car is to use two standard intercoolers instead of one.

If I connected the disco one in series with the defender one, would it be worth it after tweeking the fueling?

I like your thinking, perhaps you'd like to try it on mine first

well if it's good enough for escort/fiesta turbos then why not a defender?

My thoughts were increased resistance would hamper low down (off turbo) performance, but increase upper performance... I guess 4 intercoolers, 2 in series with another 2 in parrallel would be best!

I wouldn't bother....

Just keep the one (and give it a clean) or buy a big, full sized one (Allisport gets my vote!!!)...

Running more than one will induce massive turbo lag, and will result in you having to make the turbo work harder - as you will need to increase the boost pressure to ensure you still get 1 bar boost pressure at the inlet manifold...

The pipe work will be complicated and difficult to install in the space avaliable.

If the cost of a new large intercooler is too much, then have a look round a local scrap yard (volvo ones are very good)... or find a local truck/lorry breakers - often cheaper and you will get a bigger intercooler!!!

This is just my view....

In all honesty, even with the standard intercooler you can get decent performace.... my 90" with increased boost pressure and tweaked pump, used to fly for a 90... was faster than most Td5's!!!
