This a 300 Tdi engine.
This part is making some strange sounds.
It sounds a bit like dry bearings or something?
What is this unit?
And. Lastly, is it hard to change the belt that runs around it??
:?

aircon pump maybe..or it could be a supercharger (joke)

Power steering or air-con i reckon, Havent got a tdi in mine :(
-
its the aircon pump jake lod,the belt is easy to change but at a guess the cluth bearings have become em knacked & thats expensive to fix IIRC
-
check its not the belt idler on its way out they make a hell of a noise when the bearings start to go, its muddy water that does it
-
If the Air con is working it's probably the idler. If it is get a new belt on and start using the air con.
Sure as hell way to goose a compressor, don't use it for long periods.

I had the idler thingy (and belt) replaced on mine last year (it fell off actually  ), don't remember it costing a lot..
-
If it is the idler you can pick up a "repair kit" off ebay for a tenner - new bearing and circlip and jobs a good'un

A new tensioner is in the region of £50+

had annoying squeak on mine, typical as i just brought it and it didn't start until a couple of days after purchase. Anyhow, it sounds like it is the water pump on mine, only did it when cold, but it has now started making a rattling sound when warm.
i really shouldnt bother buying moters
Water pump cheap enough, and look easy enough to fit, but any recommendations in Northampton area who will fit, i don't want to start causing more problems yet

Have a good check round before commiting to a pump there are a lot of pulleys to play up, try a squirt of wd40 or the equivalent behind one pulley at a time with the engine off naturally (careful of the fan belt though), and see if it goes away, it wont cure it but it will tell you which one you are looking at, also have a pull on the pulleys from side to side for any movement, especially water pump and alternator

gonna take the sensible route, and get someone who knows what they are on about to take a look, before i start replacing things willy nilly, should find out tomorrow :?
-
turned out to be loose fan belt on mine, the belt was actually the wrong size (too big).
Sounds like a completely different engine now, lets just hope it stays that way :?

had a 300 tdi in the defender, no aircon tho. the timing belt is around there and made funny noises for a bit. the pully split shortly after and made a bit of a mess... be sure its only the aircon before opening wallet.
