As a young person I've had much hassle with insurance, so I completely know what its like. When I was 17 Adrian Flux said "we don't insure anyone under the age of 18", so I waited, then at 18 with a quote I'd already had for being 18 they said "sorry, you should never have been given that quote, we don't insure anyone under the age of 19". I thought this would go on forever. The age for driving the 109 (2.6L) went from 21 to 25 in a year. Eventually when I was 20 I was able to get insurnance on an 88' for about £750, through the co-op, was the cheapest by about £300. Now I'm 21 I'm insured with my dad on the 88' for just under £500. When I'm 25 I believe I can get classic car insurance.
I also have a little fiesta which cost over £600 to insure, the prices are ridiculous, even though I did 'pass plus', which I was told would give me cheaper quotes, did it f***!!!
-
same with me now im 24 things are getting bettre there is light at the end
-
im 20 & paying 500 ish FC on my 90,its my policy & my dad is a named driver

Landy, is that Lancaster 01480 number, that company is 2 miles from me and wanted £298 for a mondeo 1.8td lx third party fire and theft. and I am 40, wanted to get a 90td this year but cant afford the insurance, have to stay as a named driver on the wifes clio turbo diesel.
Having had company cars insured for me for over 18 years I have no no claims bonus anyway.
-
I just got some online quotes for my 18 year old daughter, who's just about to take her test - Quotes ranged from £1018 - £2997!!!
But by insuring her at the Lincs address instead of Kent, I can get it down to £845
-
Insured with Tesco on the Shoggie .... £350 fully comp and full no claims.

Ahhh a saga lout
Found out at last
-
we WERE with saga, ripoff, they wanted £457 fully comp for our jeep
A/Flux 280 fc 8)
my jeep is with Sureterm, they are toooo fussy, not bad prices though, I'll go with A/F next time.

IME Saga are not at all cheaper for anything. I've tried them for various services (yes I'm an old crock) and they are just generally nore expensive.
Disco Fully Comp with wife both had 6 points each £250 which I thought was very good with Barclaycard of all people. It took 50 quid off the premium to put my wife on the policy. Esure for example wouldn't insure me at all due to 6 points.
Incidentally that bit about Kent and Lincs - I have dealt with insurance companies with my business and I'd say never, ever lie about anything. If they get wind of anything like that they simply won't pay out on FC and will try and recover TP costs etc. from you.
That said how does any young person get a fair deal on insurance?
Mike

i am 38 and pay £252 for my range rover thats with highway ins and me been high risk as i am a truck driver not to bad going by what you lot pay :D
-
Adrian Flux gave me the best quote on the 90. Internal roll cage, upgraded intercooler, bull bars and a 'my fault' accident in the past year all added to it but it still only came out at £275 full comp.
It does help when they say "do you have any other car?"
"yes, two and a motorcycle"
"Are they insured wit us?"
"No"
"We could do you a good deal on them sir"
"I am sure you could, I will bear it in mind when they are up for renewal"
The annoying one was the 110. After it was converted to a camper we informed the insurance company (footman James) and the premium nearly doubled  . We will go with Barry Scott when that one is up for renewal as his quote was very competative for a 2nd car on limited milage.

I'm sure you already know, but just incase, be very wary of "box-shifter" type insurance, like Kwikfit which are other companies rebranded, make sure your insurance documents list every modification. some of them don't comprehend the difference between a 200 Tdi Disco, and a 200 Tdi Bobtail Disco running 36" Simexs with front and rear Winch. They list both as the same, you get a cheap quote, until something happens then all of a sudden they knew nothing about it, and your not insured.
Been there done that many years ago with a Stretched VW Camper Van (Don't ask).
-
When my dad first got his 109' about 10 years ago he was insured as a 12 seater for under £100. I think now its not too far above, limited milage, classic vehicle it all becomes very cheap.
For a young person I've found that co-op insurnace is the best (not cheap, but the cheapest), you will need to phone them, get a quote, then arrange for a visit to your OWN home by a rep, who goes through everything with you, gives you the price, sells the insurnace and prints out a certificate of insurnace. It was really great. By the second year of my driving the Landy they were still cheap, but A/F were even cheaper. They know about everything on mine. Had a bit of hassle with other companies when trying to explain 'parabolic suspension' and 'capstan style winch, for personal recovery only', they didn't understand.
It's ridiculous that it costs me more to insure a little 1.3 Fiesta than it does to insure a big ol' 2.25 Landrover, hmm, which is going to do more damage in a collision...
Having said that there is a light as gecko points out, not long left till I get there either, by starting to earn some money as of July aswell it'll become more affordable on my parents.
-
Landy, is that Lancaster 01480.
thats the extors..sorry people
-
Got a P reg 300tdi Disco, cost the same to insure as my New Fiesta Zetec Tdci that i part exd in for it - a lovely £1,200 but on the 88 i only pay £250.00
Found adrian flux to be a waste of time tey cosntantly moved the goal posts, so now with Tesco for the Disco and Sure Term for the 88
either way its a rip off . . . . thos prices are with full no claims too!!!!
-
I am 23 with 1 years no claims. I am with adrian flux tpft on the 88" for £330 parked on the road. I told them about the snorkel and the wheels, didnt effect the price. Also checked about parabolics and things for the future but that didnt effect ££ either.
They quoted me about £40 a year more for a 200tdi disco that tesco wanted over 2 grand for!
Never had a problem yet....
-
Until I got the bobtail (which is insured with Adrian Flux), by far the cheapest I could find for my 110 was with NFU. Unfortunately they don't like modified vehicles, but if you've got a standard Land Rover, they'll probably be among the cheapest. (and no, you don't have to be a farmer to use them).

i pay £450 F/C for my 90 with norwich union ! before that i paid £985 F/C for a rover 218 sld. and before that i had a renault 9 diesel and had to pay £1600 for a car that could just touch 80mph so i swapped it for the rover which does well over a ton and i pay almost half the insurance - insurance is barmey !!!! :?
-
Barmey indeed. Myself and swmbo both insured a 1.4 astra estate (me one year, her the next) but she paid several hundred less than me with the same company. When I insured my landrover if I added her as a named driver it added nearly £300! When she insured her (cough) frontera, adding me as a named driver was £30 a year?
I am sure there is a damn big hat somewhere that they pluck these numbers from!
