Title: Alternator light flashing when on full lock
Post by: fish on January 17, 2006, 22:42:29
Anyone know what this might be, seen it several times now only flashes for a second or two. I have checked alternator wires and belt tension, all seem ok, any pointers?

belts not tight enough is the normal thing as ur making it slip due to the load on the pas pump

Id say belt is too slack too.

I've had this also, except in my case it turned out to be the PAS pump (the pulley that sits between the fan belt and the aux belt) going all to wonk.

If the belt seems tight enough, it might be worth checking that the PAS pump isn't on it's way out, check to see if the pulley is wobbly.  If it is, then it's a sign that it's probably going to fail at some point, and leave you with no alternator, and very heavy steering.

It's the PAS pump belt, it may be greasy or worn, there may be wear in the sides of the pulley too that make it worse.  The PAS pump belt is very hard to get tight enough to stop this IMHO, I slacken the pulley bolts to alloy the pulley to slew, then tighten the pump adjusting bolts.  Tightening the pulley puts an extra bit of tension on the belts.  I have know people using a jack to tighten the belt

the only way i could get it tight enough was to remove the alternator 1st the tighten it, then bolt the alternator back on
