Title: Oh no, not again!!

Some of you may remember I had a rear diff problem (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=9790) last year.

Well, it's not the same problem ... but it is the same end :roll:  Apparently (according to new garage I used today), the pinion shaft has extensive travel in/outwards. It was very low on oil but I can't say I've noticed any dripping on the floor!? :-k

Anyway, based on the above is it worth looking to get the diff rebuilt/overhauled, or should I just look for a replacement from a breaker?

If I get a secondhand one from a breaker, is it worth getting the half shafts from the same axle (as they will be worn in the same way?!)?

If the price is right then you may as well but I wouldn't say it's necessary.
There's always the risk that the ones you get from the breakers turn out to be worse than yours are, but if nothing else at least you'll have a spare set of halfshafts.  :D

ISn't this a 24 spline diff?  If so you have a particularly good point about the wear, but as Budgie says you need to be sure they 'new' diff/shafts are at least as good as your old ones.  If not I wouldn't buy the diff.

Rebuilding the pinion needs a bit of care to do right... but at least if you do it, you know it's right.

The problem with getting another second hand one is that you never know if the bearings on it are just as bad.

I'm waiting for a price from a local chap to rebuild mine - I'll then try and decide what to do! :roll:
