Title: Help With Chassis Numbers - Updated -
Post by: Northmead on January 21, 2006, 08:38:08
Hi All

I am Thinking of getting other Series 3 Can anyone help me with
Chassis Numbers, I want to know the year it was made, I know the date of first registration 2/2/72

Number is 90101561A

But how do you Decode This

If I replace the Original Chassis with A New Galvanised One
I Have heard that this will have a bearing on the tax except status of the vehicle, Anyone know about this.

Regards

Brian

I'm not sure you can tell from that.

901   Model: Land Rover, Series III
   Body type: Basic
   Wheel base: 88in
   Engine: petrol
   Model years: 1972-1979
Destination: Home market, right-hand drive (RHD)
01561   Serial number
A   Design: Unmodified

You'd probably have to contact the obscure records dept. at Land Rover or Gaydon to find the actual build date.

Normally the date of first registration is the important figure, is there a reason you need the actual date of build ?

Even though it does not matter in this case, because it was registered in '72, if a vehicle was built and first used prior to 1973, such as in the military, but was not registered until, lets say 1980, the vehicle can still retain tax exemption.
