Hello all,
My disco is leaking oil from the front of the diff. The metal on the front has worn so thin that the oil just seaps through it. (See pic)
I'm wondering what the best way to sort this out is, and how difficult/easy it will be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D
Thanks,
Brother Ted.

Just another question, whilst I'm here:
If i take the axle off, can the diff pan be changed without removing the diff?
Thanks!
Brother Ted.
-
afaik you cut off the old diff pan and weld on a new one.
you should take the diff out as when you grind the pan off metal filings will contaminate the axle casing

Yep, that about the size of it........
My rear diff pan has rotted through at the bottom. Its sealed up with 'Chemical Metal' at the minute. Lasted 12 months so far

ah so we need to remove the front axle?
Is this a big job? never attempted it before.

Not a big job if you have the tools etc.........but the diff pan can be changed very easly (sp).........and a new one welded on.
I broke my rear diff on the last trial and put a big hole in the pan.......just welded it up.......no problems.
-
ah well thats good news. Anyone know where I can get a diff pan for a Discovery 1 300tdi? (or are they all the same for landys?)
And how much?
Thanks,
Brother Ted.
-
They cost about £20 but i carnt find any online........i use 4muddyfeet for most of my parts.
-
And there all the same for the disco's

Okay next question....
We are thinking of buying a MIG welder, but how difficult is it to weld? Can you just practice on some scrap metal and then blag it?
Or is it a proper skill that requires something like a training course?
I've looked it up on google and people are talking about pushing and pulling :?:
Ho hum
Brother Ted.

Its easy for me to say thats its easy.........but you could have a go your self but.........it needs to be sealed up so no oil leaks out.
Practise and practise and you could do it yourself..........and if you get stuck and arnt to far from me i could do it for ya.

Thanks for the offer richie, we're in Hertfordshire - long way from you!
We're now looking at a complete front axle...
And my NEXT (And hopefully final!) question is:
Will a front axle from a 1996 Discovery 3.9l Petrol be the same as the front axle from a 1994 Discovery 300tdi?
Thanks again!
Brother Ted.

No probs..............the V8's are the same i think just different props.........it was the early one that were different...........but maybe double check before.
Good Luck.

welding isnt too tricky if you are handy with the spanners. I would say it's quite difficult to manage to weld and get an oil tight seal eary on though.
If you do decide to geta MIG, go for the biggest one you can afford.Even though you will mostly weld thin stuff, the bigger ons seem better at regulating the lower settings to get a weld of good consistancy.
Aslo worth considering is how much welding you are likely to do, as disposable gas cylinders dont last long (half an hour for arogon/co2) and are quite expensive if you buy lots, so a welder that can use rented large cyclinders may be worth thinking about - they aren't that expensive (about 35 quid a fill and about 50 quid a year to rent).
http://www.welduk.com/ is good source for kit at reasonable prices - if you need any help or pointers, just ask!

Thanks for that Matthew - useful info!
We're now hoping to buy a new front axle - as the diff pan isn't the only thing wrong:
The chrome has flaked off of the swivel and has loosened the rubber seal so oil has been leaking.
hmm,
Brother Ted.

can i interest sir a discovery front axle with two new swivles and no oil leaks anywhere?
M
-
Sure you can! Where and how much? :D
Oh, and what year is it from?
-
isa 1990 200 tdi so not sure its the same or not, its in hampshire/berkshire
-
Okay, well im going to look at one tomorrow, and if thats no good, I'll get back to you.
Thanks for the offer,
Brother Ted.

There different........
200's run the 10 spline diffs etc and the 300's are 24 spline.........you could put the whole axle in but you would have to change the braking system as the 200 has two brake pipes to each caliper and the 300 only have one.........also remember when buying parts like brake pads etc that its a 200 etc
IMO........put a 300 back in...........saves all the trouble :D

Not having a welder at the moment, I managed to make fairly long tern temporary repair by scrapping all the loose rust off, cleaning well will cellulose thinners, then qickly plastering it in oil/petrol resistant silicone sealer. Quick coat of hammerite over the top once dry and job done! Not a permanent solution but lasted a few months.

the new front axle has arrived here now, bloomin heavy!
No rust in sight so hopefully no need to weld..
