hello all
in a bid to resolve backlash problems and a need to sort out the handbrake i have removed the rear prop and hanbrake housing.
there seems to be a large amount of play in the output shaft.i can turn the shaft clockwise or anti clockwise about an inch each way before the front prop engages and turns.
i did this whilst in gear.also when turning the shaft i can hear and feel the clunks.how is this resolved??

It's either play in the transfer box, or the all-too-common shaft wear on the output of the gearbox.
If you take the big round plate off the back of the transfer box, you can inspect the transfer box input gear and shaft to see how they look.

thanks tim.is it esy to get out and replace???

It should just twist and pull out.
If it's worn & you cant afford to replace the gearbox yet then an interim solution is to replace the input gear, this will take a little of the slack out but may not last long if the mainshaft is badly worn.

sounds like it may be time to go for that defender transferbox then.are there any other ratios apart from the 4-7

The TD5 Defender box is a 1.4:1 ratio, the Disco is 1.2:1 and the earlier Defenders have 1.6:1. Details on Ashcrofts (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/part_8.html#pa1) site.
Oh, and the low box is the same across the range so with large dia tyres then you're slightly overgeared on decents in low box.
I went a recon 1.4:1 transfer box from Ashcrofts, runs nice with the 33" tyres. :D
The only problem is, if the mainshaft has worn then it's the gearbox that needs replacing/referb' not the transfer box. :(

:D be keeping an eye on that then me getting same problem :?

I have a clunk from what i assumed was the gearbox..but it goes away when the props are greased...so big angle props next! This isnt the prob on yours Chuga as you have clearly got play somewhere! never straightforward is it!
