Title: Auctions

i am selling my car on ebay at the moment  (my post in the auctions forum: http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=17554 )
when its sold i hope to buy a discovery from a real auction

i found this one through a LandRover mag http://www.brightwells.com/
are there any more 4x4 specific auctions around the country especialy in the north of England (with website would be even better)

Those guys are the best - very good range of vehicles at every auction.  The down side is that they are very popular so that can drive the price up.  Not so bad when you are bidding against the trade, but a pain if you are bidding against another member of the public.

Worth having a look throught their documents on what sold for what at the last auction - gives a good guide to prices.

I bought my last Discovery from there and have been very pleased.  I paid top money for it, but then it was the right vehicle.

If you're going to Brightwells and haven't been to car auctions before, I'd recommend you go along without your wallet first time round to see how it all works.

I looked into it but to me, the risk of buying a crock o' junk for a tiptop price was too high.  You really need to be on the ball, and as Henry says, the prices tend to be high.

IMHO you'll get a much better deal by keeping your nose to the ground and buying privately.  For example, I paid £2750 privately for my first Disco, at a time when similar vehicles were going for £4K at Brightwells.

The other thing I've often wondered about is buying in the Republic of Ireland.  Prices seem to be somewhat cheaper over there, and as far as I could make out, the only charge you pay to import a second-hand vehicle from the RoI is about £35 to re-register it.  However, don't quote me on this, I may have missed something important!

Agreed, certainly wouldn't recommend it if you are not confident with auctions.  

Scared me stupid, but I did get the right car for the right money and at the right time.

It helps that my dad was a regular there, and I visited not infrequently.
