Title: Gotchyas!
Post by: Evilgoat on January 24, 2006, 10:41:03
Just got holds of a K reg Vitara JLX. Its a bit ratty and tatty but its all cosmetic and for what I paid for it including a year of TAX and MOT I'm not going to complain.

Its a 1600 carb engine and looks well taken care of with 80K on the clock.

I was wondering as I have yet to have a real serious go over it, what normaly problems ocur with these, anything I should be looking for in particular?  Makes an odd whine at idle that sounds like something contacting the fan but not had a good chance to look at it yet.

Not alot goes wrong with the 8v carb vitara.
Depends on how mad you want to go with the mods.
Lift the suspenion too much and you get front cv and diff housing probs.

rusts in all the usual places, but not the chassis.

Chassis looks great, in fact I'm suspicious of this thing ever been offroad despite being told it has. I can still see LOTS of white paint under there.

Wheel arches, sills, suspention mounts and all anchors seem good and rust free however some idiot has been using washing-up liquid in the washer bottle and thus I have to strip down the fram round the windscreen, strip a lot of paint and refinish it, no biggie by the looks.

The soft top is frayed at all the edges and someone has kindly stitched the zip on the back closed (this is gonna be a pain) But its waterproof.

It hink if I'm totally honest theres nothing actually wrong with it, its just not been looked after and needs some tlc (So I'm gonna take it offroad, yeah, thats looking after it :) )

Now two-tone white and brown.

Can you guys reccomend a workshop manual or is Haynes the best bet? :( IMHO the new Haynes manuals are junk.

Need to chase down two minor electrical faults and a randon strange whining noise that happens once in a blue moon when cruising and no load on anything. Sounds like a spring touching something. Do thes have the spring fingers on the clutch housing as from the sound this seems a likeley culprit, declutching makes it go away.
