Anybody know any good resources for rebuilding Diffs?
Any good books or web sites??

Nah, I've aquired a spare and want to have a go at refurbing it.

Drum, Ive got the 'dealer' workshop manual, you can borrow it if you want, covers standard and salisbury rebuilds....
If you really want, I can scan it and add it to your web site......Let me know.

If it wasn't for the copyright, and I know that sooner or later some one will moan, I'd say scan it.
If you're off to either of the forthcoming pub meets (MC or NCGL) can I grab it off you, and I'll get it back to you for the next one after. Then I'll try it, and write it up on the site once I've done it. :D
Strange how these things change, I've got the Workshop and Overhaul manuals for the TD5 and 300TDi defenders, and it tells you how to remove the Diffs, but doesn't mention messing around inside them :?

Nor does it mention you need a spreader for the axle casing to remove a Salisbury diff :oops:

I guess you won't be checking that then?? Have you broke the seal before you found out?? Or did you just check the half shafts??

refurbed my re diff after it blew 3 days after I 1st played at whitworth, technically not a difficult mechanical job in the grand scale of things, was harder getting it out than refurbing it.

No, I did have some vauge recollection about Salisbury's being a bit more difficult ............. so I checked first ............... :shock: . Having had a look at the rear drive flanges and half shafts I think wev'e found the ar$e end problem, better check the oil though. :roll:

Intresting to hear that, having read up a bit there is a lot of reference to special tools etc, but a search through old topics on here has found quite a few who have set them up "by feel" :shock:
The diff in question is from my Son's 110, you can probably see from the picture that the end float of the drive flange is a "bit" excessive

well mine was set up "by feel" but I must admit to being good with the spanners. Its almost a year later and several abusive off road days later and it is still strong and its not like the vehicle is a pull it out and only use it at the weekends vehicle I do at least 50 miles a day in it too and from work.

While I have a reasonable confidence with the spanners, I'm also like to read what I'm doing first :D Once I've done it a few times, I guess you will get a feel for it, but I'm not there yet.

The salisbury does need a special tool to open out the case, but, it can also be squeezed top to bottom to achieve the same result(probably easier to Ghetto fab some apparatus to do this........)
Or try to rent an appropriate tool, theres more than just the Landy axle needs this tool(lots of Dana axles in yank stuff and light commercial)

I think I've found what I want, in Book 3, of the old 110 workshop manuals circa mid 1980s, Thanks for the help guys, I'll come back if it's not what I think.
