Title: starting problems still
Post by: landroverkeith on January 28, 2006, 15:49:32
Can Anyone offer any ideas plz as to why my series 3 wont turn over?

recently it would turn over and over but not fire, tried jump leads and bump starting to no avail...
someone mentioned maybe the glow plugs are shot... so ive changed the glow plugs and now indeed the dash light is much quicker to respond etc etc.

But now i cannot even get the engine to turn over... all the electrics work and the battery has just been replaced after a nite on charge.

when i turn the key there is no response at all no click from the starter motor or anything.

any help would be gratefully received as im starting to really pull my hair out with it now..

many thanks keith

I.ve  had lots of fun starting landrovers over the years , so the first thing I would do is to check all the wires  ( I mean bat to chassis , chassis to block  , starter to solenoid , solenoid to bat and any others you can find ) , once you have the starter running we can get to the fun stuff , you can get glowplugs in two different types , a coil of wire type and a blunt probe type . the best are the blunt probe type as they seem to burn out less often than the coil type . you need to check that each glowplug is working by energizing the resistor and measuring the voltage at each plug . Some are wired in series and some in parallel  . now crank it over and see what happens  . if it won't start , check there is no restriction in the air flow ( be it in the filter or in the pipe ) , no resriction and still wont start ? try cracking the injector pipes where they go into the injectors to see if you have fuel to the injectors  . fuel and air and still won't start ? time to try a compression test . I think if you have compression , fuel, and air it should go . If it still wont go you may need to look at pump timing . Let me know how you get on , or any questions .........Al

Check the starter solenoid is working, put a test across the switching wire, then turn the key to start and see if you get a reading.

If that is working then it could be the solenoid itself, you can do a quick test by shorting the heavy duty connections to the starter with a jump lead from the pos on the battery to the one that runs down to the starter, also repeat this if you can reach to the end of the cable on the starter itself.

Be careful though, all you need to do is tap it against the terminal the motor will spin with a clunk.

If your solenoid is hard to access try a long screwdriver with the jump lead clipped to the driver and use that to touch the cable connections

Just got to beware that you dont touch anything else apart from the cable connection

To aid my landy starting yesterday we put an extra earth strap from the battery (-ve) to the engine and went to Halfords and bought a big ol' battery, that has 700 cold cranking Amps.  Does the trick!!
