Its me dads B-day....
Bought a video cam and wants to make crazy vids!!!
So, on a windows system, whats a good package??? :?
-
Adobe Premiere is one of the best, but expensive.
I am afraid that I don't have much experience of the cheaper options.

If your Machine is Windows XP there is Move Maker on it (Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Entertainment) it's not the greatest but I've used it a couple of times.
-
adobe premier is good but i can advise cheaper and very good alternatives
pinnacle studio
ulead videostudio
both are reasonable on amazon
ive used both and like both but not in anger to say which is better.
but i always use these for capture/editing/burning to dvd from my digi camcorder
the software controls the playback on the camera too which is good.
much better than what comes with xp

Thats great, I love adobe stuff but alas so expensive... :?
Bought the pinnacle one so I'll see how the old boy gets on
-

You need a tv capture card.

-
yes or you could get the capture card from pinnacle
mate in work has it and it converts it from analogue to digital for you.
will ask him tomorrow for the model but i think its called moviebox.
-
Try one of these. They are cheap, and my mate uses it all the time. :)

I use ULEAD
Its easy to use, can cope with a couple of video tracks, a soundtrack and a commentary, has nice fades, etc
Titles are a bit awkward(that may just be me), but overall its a good un.
Warning. When you eventually process the finished movie and process it and send to DVD, it takes ages. Maybe 2 hours to process for a 15 minute film. (thats a pentium 4 Compaq) Either get a fancy computer, or just be patient and wait for it to do its thing....

a firewire card for your pc and the connection leads to your camcorder will bring best results(no loss of data).
as you play the movie on the camcorder in real time you then"capture"the video data on your pc as a digital file.
this file can then be processed in various ways to get dvd or a compressed avi file.

Too true....my Canon MVX200i is a great bit of kit but I still can't see how I can connect the camcorder to my firewire port on the PC !!!!! I've a mini jack plug and a mini-usb. Stuffed me thinks !!!!

For those without fireware or usb on the camera ANY TV-Tuner card with a composite or Svideo input will do the job. My old Sony Handycam connects to my Hauppage WinTV card this way and I capture and chop up my videos without any problems.
I run Gentoo Linux, so I cant comment on any of the windows packages.
