well, having been told it was a pretty easy job I had a go with my friend Ian.. two days later and she's back together - the pic below was taken after part reassembly.
The old release bearing was a solidified molten mass of metal and plastic, the slave cylinder rubber boot was no where to be found.. two trips to the local motor factor (one for the clutch - the bearing failed on the way home from buying the new clutch!) and one for a new slave cylinder.
All in £130 or thereabouts, changed gearbox oils whilst they were off.
I've no idea how much a commerical place charges but, I'd be tempted to use them... saying that the only problems we had really (apart from puzzlnig on how to remove the bell housing from the engine when it was 'glued' on with some kind of silicone sealant) was just about every screw and bolt holding the floor in place was rusted solid.

Hmmm, I think that's one of those jobs I'd leave to the 'professionals' me finks!!

once you've worked out a couple of 'puzzles' it's a pretty easy job, just heavy, a second large hi-lift trolley jack would be very helpful.
Come to thnk of it I'm sure the landrover manual hasa plan for a transmission jack 'cage'
Got to do Ian's in the next few weeks so I may weld one up :-)
After removing the engine and box from a disco though I wouldn't attempt that myself - I just can't ee how you remove the bell using top bolts (I cut a hole in the floor in my disco!!!)

A friend mentioned the straps were useful for stedying things when changing a box on a light weight so thought I'd give it a try and it certanily helps as the bioxes are pretty heavy - there was two of us well!

do you reckon it would be worth making up the transmission jack adapater? I'm sure I have some box section somewhere.

it might help to keep things squaire, which would have made putting the gearbox back on a lot easier. and you get to play with your welder :D

made 1 up for the manual boxs & 1 for the autos,use on a proper transmission jack which can tilt & twist & helps a bit,even more use if on a ramp

transmission jack.. hmmm I could write it on the side of the trolley jack! :D Whilst it would be nice I really cant justify the money - having changed, erm... one gearbox in my entire life I'm not sure it would be a good return (although that's changing to two in two weeks shortly!)
as far as I can tell all you need is a box section box as it were (the corner posts stop it rolling off. If I put a nice locating pin in the middle it should sit in place of the normal saddle..cant think how to make it tilt though.

thats a good idea! If I make the pin slightly too small then teh bottle jack will easily be able to move it a few degrees in which ever plane is needed :-)
