I'm getting married on 1st April, then we're off to Loch Ness for our honeymoon :)
Quite like the idea of hiring a 90 or 110 (or maybe even disco or rangie) whilst up there to pootle about in and maybe find some tracks if that sort of thing is allowed.
Does anyone know of a reasonably priced hire firm, the only thing I've found so far is one of the main stream places and it's £400+ for a week!!!!

Take your own ,,,,,,,,,,,,save the money and have a fortnight........
-
if you want to go offroad speak to karloss,pm him & ask about the ultra secret test site that only myself & him have had a shot on,its also local to an excellent tea room
-
Try SHB 4x4 hire.
I dont know if they have branches up there.
Or TLS rental.
They sometimes have 90's and 110's.
:D
Good Luck!

would love to, but I've too many other things to worry about other than the reliability of my truck!
Tell you what - you could lend me yours :)

i work for midland 4x4 sales part off the shb4x4 hire on a sat they willl hire out a defender 90/110 and u cn take them off road but u have to pay for damage
-
thanks for that... not likely to go anywhere where damage was likley - at most gravel tracks I guess as I wont have any self recovery gear!
it'll prolly end up being a corsa though :(

Lanes, as you know them, don't really exisit up here Matt. :( The law is different to England & Wales so there's no RUPPs or BOATs and most of the lanes are on estate land.
There is the Corriarick Pass that has it's northern end near Fort Augustus but I wouldn't go taking a hire car over that!! 8-[
If you're thinking about hiring when you get up there then the nearest Land Rover dealer is MacRae & Dick (http://www.macraeanddick.landrover.co.uk/) in Inverness, could always try them.
Or here's a couple of places I found on Google:
http://www.sharpsreliablewrecks.co.uk/4x4page.html
http://www.aberdeen4x4.co.uk/sitemap/4x4_hire_Inverness.htm
As others have said, have a chat to Karloss and see if he can help.

I did have that opinion, but hadn't really looked into it.. I just kind of thought a 90 would be a nice plodding vehicle:-)
Are there any websites or other things I can read to find out about places where one can drive? (if they exist)
We are thinking of moving to Scotland one day anyway so I guess I really should double check the little thigs :)

There's not really any sites I know of. :(
Best thing to do, if you do move up here, is to join one of the clubs. They manage to get access to land and "pay'n'play" sites without too much of a problem.
Here on the island we've got the peat tracks (but they don't go very far), and a couple of estate tracks that you have to get permission to use and that's about it. :(
Have a look through this article on Scottish Land Rover Owners Club (http://www.slroc.co.uk/articles/greenlaning.html) site about access in Scotland.

Loch Ness is very chilly that time of year, in fact it's cold all year round. I'd think about a hotel or a B&B.
Give Jimmy & Lorna Service a call on 01320 366291. They are my next door neighbours and run the best B&B in the village (Fort Augustus).
Remind me nearer the time and I'll see what I can do about arranging a little trip on some private land near here.(the top secret test site that me and Mike have played on will be shut by then, the man with the jcb is coming this week some time).

is he coming to remove the isuzu from between the trees?

Phone the local Land Rover dealer. Tell them you thinking of moving up there, and you need two new cars. They might let you have it for the weekend. :)

Don't know about that, we're talking about a dealer who wouldn't even send a Disco dashboard over to Stornoway for the island's LR Service Agent to fit under warrenty.
They wanted me to go to them, 3 hours on the ferry, 75 mile drive and an overnight stay!!
I phoned Land Rover Customer Services & they told them to send over!!
If you let us have the dates you're up here then I may be able to make it across as well, if Karloss doesn't mind another tagging along, and I could always go via Skye and get Duncan, if the B&B isn't too busy.
-
thank you all for your replies.... we're staying here,
http://www.lochnesscottages.com/
cold? It's gotta be warmer than riding the motorbike to work at the moment (90 not yet back on the road)
Veronica wants to visit lots of places whislt we are up there... do you think I could get away with a quick mud-club trip? After finding out prices it looks like we'll be in a corsa or something similar though (are they any good off-road?) :D

just been reading the scotways website and the other link - sounds just as complicated as it's getting down here!
-
My dad was the transport manager on BRAVEHEART (see credits...bryan baverstock) he used loads of 110's for the crew. He used a firm called Wrights Reliable Wrecks based near inverness/fort william. All new motors. I had a drive up a forest track that was what got me hooked onto landies! Not sure if they still exist....Braveheart was filmed in 1994.
Good Luck

Hi Budgie
Long time no see. We're still here, haven't been blown off the map yet. Thanks for the kind words about the B&B, but we're closed at the moment. The work on the house has finally begun. We hope to open again at Easter but we're at the mercy of the builders.
By the way, is Matt really getting married on the 1st of April?. Brave man.
regards
-
yes I'm really getting married on 1st april.... in the afternoon!

Hi Duncan, we will be down to see you both again sometime this year, try to get better weather this time though!!
I take it your getting the building work done in "Skye time" like they work in "Lewis time" over here where the days seem so much slower!!
Looks like I'm heading down to the Spring Adventure in Yorkshire in mid-April, fancy a drive if you've got time?
Glad to see you, at least, made it the afternoon Matt!! :D
-
it'll prolly end up being a corsa though :(
Matthew
you be surprised where a hire corsa will take you   just dont let them look underneath when you take it back

If you're up for it then I'll speak to Duncan and see if he can get away for that weekend.
I was thinking of departing on the Thursday, stop overnight around the border and arrive Friday Morning, unless you fancy doing it in one hit?
Sorry Matt, sort of taking over the threads.
-
I usually do it in one hit. But then I've not got as far to go as you!
What are the dates? I'll probably have to book time off to go.
Are you planning on camping? At the border I mean, not driffield.
-
It's the 13th & 14th April, details are here (http://www.springadventure.co.uk/), including the booking forms.
I normally stop at Annadale Water Services, or further down, for the night then it's not that much of a drive in the morning and your fresh and can take your time. Although I did do Billing on a oner last time I went, left home at 0615 for the 0715 ferry and arrive Billing at 2230.
I'm happy to do it in one hit if you can't get the time off but from this end I have to leave the house at 6am to drive to Tarbert for the ferry so it means that it'll be about an 16 hour day by the time we get there. :?
I've still got your number so I'll give you a ring on Sunday pm or evening and I'll try Duncan as well.
-
It's the 13th & 14th April
You need to get onto LRO, they think it's on the 13th and 14th of MAY!!!!
And their supposed to be organizing the event!!
-
Typically, I'm working nights then so I'll have to book a few days off. Now there's a pity :^o :^o .
