Has anyone changed the main shaft bearing, have seen some kits about for doing your self, just wondering how involved it actually is, or whether it is worth taking box in to have refurbished.
Thanks

Hi mate, I have a 93 k reg TDI disco that had the main shaft bearing replaced by a garage in maldon, essex...they did it for the previous owner and TOTALY ripped him off, they charged him £750 to do it. he was under the impression he got a new gearbox for that, and so was I when he sold it to me, when I rang the garage to check they were quick to say they only did the bearing and NO warranty was given for the box.
My advice is find a GOOD garage or mate and get the whole thing refurbed while you have it out, that way you know its 100% and wont give you any probs as long as you own it, you can get a recon box for £300 on ebay, or anywhere and around £150 to get it fitted, sounds a lot of money but you will pay around £300 to get the bearings done.
Regards, Terry

My main bearing is getting quite noisy now, stops as soon as I put the clutch in. How noisy can the bearing get before it needs changing, what happens if its not changed, is there a BIG BANG and lots of damage?

i wouldnt say they ripped him off, they werent honest in what they did but they didnt rip him off,its more cost effective to fit a recon box than rebuild one but if the punter wants a bearing fitted then the garage will do it,you do have to realise that to fit any bearings on a & is a strip down job, also if you can find a garage to fit it for £150please point me there way cos even doing it cash at £35an hour its still over £200

can we clarify the problem here?
is the noise there all the time or does it go away when you press the clutch,if so its the release bearing,
a main shaft bearing requires a full strip down to replace, this is what i thought u were refering to
-
I was told main shaft bearing wear was identified by no noise with clutch in and noise when out, is this correct?

well without hearing it not 100% sure but id be surprised if it wasnt the release bearing
-
sounds like new box then, I know its not the release bearing as that was done recently with the clutch and fork. Noticed the shaft was a little loose then but left it at time.
Now where did I put that piggy bank and the universal key........

Was the noise there before the new clutch? as I'd be surprised in mainshaft bearing wear came on that quickly. Don't worry about a little play in the input, it's meant to be there, the pilot (spigot) bearing takes care of that.
It wouldn't be the first time a new clutch realease bearing had failed.
With engine running and foot off clutch, you get the noise, yes
With clutch fully down the noise stops if I understand you
try putting some pressure on the clutch, not enough to release it, about half as much. Do you get the noise then?
Do you get the noise whilst the car is moving?
Finally for £700 I'd want a recon Ashcroft box with shift enhancements, new clutch and fitting with a 1 year guarantee on all the work and parts.
Oh and a courtesy car.

Noise has been there a while, only really apparant while driving, ie putting drive to the wheels, it was present before the clutch change

I am sorry to disagree with you buddy but I think that anyone who charges £750 for just a bearing replacement is taking the [throw it]..Anyone who agrees please say so..You can get a recon box supplyed and fitted for that with 6months warranty. and my local garage only charges around £14-£20 an hour so it can be done for £150 to fit a new box...You dont own a garage by any chance do you
