I currently have a 1990 Defender 90.
It's been fitted with a 300 TDI engine.
It's got a 2 inch lift kit, Grizzly Claw tyres (235/85/16), a roll cage, Husky winch and a few other odds and sods.
What would you spend about £2k on to further improve it? :?:
Bigger wheels/tyres? Intercooler upgrade, better suspension?
Ideas welcome.
Cheers.

It all depends on how you use it

Fair point.
Okay, play days, greenlaning.
Most of its time is spent on the Extreme course at Langdale Quest.

maxi drive lockers and halfshafts. If youve done lots of miles a rebuilt gearbox is always a good idea.

I would further upgrade your suspension to get more travel, don't bother changing tyres until your grizzleys are goosed. Intercooler upgrades are fantastic for road use but you won't really see the benefit offroad at low speeds. You could go for a diff locker in your back axle and some nice uprated halfshafts. What about your kit, get a ground anchor to go with your winch. Stick a snorkle on, even if you don't like deep wading it's better safe than sorry. At the end of the day it's a landrover, you can do pretty much anything to it you can think of.

Bulli - why Maxidrive rather than ARB?

Put Warn 8274 on the front, move Husky to the rear and fit a rear locker. I would fit ARB locker with Ashcroft halfshafts in the rear. Might have a few pence left over if you fit it yourself
MaxiDrive halfshafts and lockers front and rear with uporated CV's will chew all of your 2K on it's own and as Mal is selling the company - I wouldn't buy it until I knew company was going to a good home for support etc.

Steve,
not sure I really need a winch at the rear.
Liking the idea of lockers though.
On the suspension front what would everyone recommend?

I like the Scorpion gear personally.
Devon 4x4 have a new range of kit too which is really nice

if you go for a front locker, uprate halshafts and CV's.
As for suspension, Procomp 14" shocks have a good reputation, as for cones etc all a bit of muchness. I went for Scorpion front cones, and D44 rear locators. To get benefit of shocks you should look at different mounts. Have a look at Gwyn Lewis's stuff.
If you go for extra articulation you'll need to look at changing out front and rear radius arms for kinked ones to get benefit, longer brake hoses and longer bump stops.
You should budget about 800-900 pounds for all of this.
Have fun spending
