Td5 Disco, just under 60k on the clock (and it's an auto).
Over the past few days I've noticed a 'tinkling' type of noise from the transmission/centre console area. Seeing as I have loads of junk/coins/keys etc stashed there I thought it was just that - until yesterday when I cleared all the junk away.....the noise is still there.
The noise is present when the engine is under light load - and as far as I can tell, in all gears - except top once the TC has locked.
I've checked for obvious oil leaks, nothing seems to be leaking too much, and everything seems to be working ok (gear changes up & down ok) - had a quick look underneath yesterday, there's nothing hanging loose or caught up in the underpinnings that could make this noise........so I'm suspecting that something in the main box or T-box is not as it should be :?
Any suggestions as where to start looking, or what the problem might be ?

I think I'd start with the propshaft U/Js at the transfer box end, both front & rear. They can make that sort of noise when they are lacking in grease and are warn because of it.

I hope it is something this simple - I was thinking that the auto box was about to self-destruct
I'll have a delve under later today and see - the props should have grease nips on them, yes ?

Yup, but not the ones in the Cardon joint . . . . :(
Ask me how I know

Remember to chock the wheels and release the handbrake, otherwise you wont know if there's any play in the rear shaft.
Also, make sure all the diff & transfer box flanges are secure, just in case one of the nuts has come adrift.

I have a 'tinkling' sound as well from under the vehicle. I suspected UJ's but as it was only about 10k miles since I did them I was not too sure.
Had the vehicle on ramps the other week and gave everything a good shake and tug while I was underneath but nothing was obviously causing the sound.
The noise is only really noticable when over rough roads or driving bumpy tracks. At normal road speed on well made roads it doesn't appear. Just covered 450 miles at the weekend and the only time it was heard was when I pulled off-road onto the tracks.
Looks like further investigations are in order.

Simon - how do you know then ?

'cos there's one sat on my garage floor :(

What ? - a busted one ?
Did the joint just let go, or was there some sort of warning (any strange noise perhaps, something like a metallic/chain/tinkling sound ? 8-[

Just a thought - it only happens when you pull off-road - not the Traction Control is it? If it only triggers occasionally, it could be - it's bloody noisy on a D2. When I first had mine I thought something was wrong with it, but they're all like that.
If you are thinking "don't be stupid, I know what the damned ABS modulator sounds like" then apologies...

My noise is definitely not TC or ACE - it's much more subtle !!!!!
Got some spare time today, so am off to crawl under and a have a good look - having chocked the wheels first

it might b the centre heat shield on the td5's above the centre box

Cheers Mikee,
I took my mate out this morning (went to pick up the 'new' roof for the 110 - wish I had the camera, was quite a sight, a Disco with a 110 roof on top !!!) - and he reckons the noise might be something rattling on the exhuast, or against a chassis leg.........hopefully dirt cheap (or free !) to fix

TBH the components in the transmission are a bit too heavy to tinkle, they would probably clunk. I think youre mate is right, more likely to be the exhaust jusy starting to blow or a baffle inside coming loose with corrosion, more gas is flowing when you hit the loud pedal you see.

:(biglaugh): Loud pedal & Td5 auto don't really go hand in hand !!!!

OK, have been grovelling around under the Disco - other than the usual oil leaks, all seems ok. No signs of the exhaust starting to blow, the exhaust doesn't seem to be touching anything it shouldn't, and no heat shields appear to be loose, but:
There's a couple of big steel 'donuts' ? on a rubber bush on the front of the rear diff, and linking the bolt that secures the bush is a wire cable, about 8" long the other end of which attaches to another bolt on the top of the diff - it's almost like a safety cable to stop the donuts from falling off if the bolt comes undone. Well, this wire/cable thing only loops around the securing bolts, so its loose - and making the noise I can hear.
What is this cable ?
Is it an important part ?
Can I take it off ?
What are the two bug donuts on the diff for ?
Ta,
Jim

Jim,
The big donut things are dampers to stop vibration through the drivetrain.
The cable is exactly as you describe - a safety feature to stop the donuts killing somebody when the bolt undoes itself.
Short answer, yes, you can take the donuts off, but you may risk getting a bit of vibration.
You could always just cable tie the safety cable down so it's not rattling around.
Cheers

Ahhhh, it all becomes clear - I'll get the cable ties out.
Cheers Chaps,
