Title: cv joint help.
Post by: denviks on February 06, 2006, 11:40:22: hi all. just tried to order a cv joint for my 93 disco 2.5tdi without abs. now i want to order one as a spare but ive been told that there are 2 types depending on the amount of splines :shock: ...is there any way of finding out how many mine has without stripping it down. i only want to carry a spare and it seems so much trouble to strip it down just to find out?

gotta be easier than that has nt it?

:cry: :cry: :cry: thanks mate. i suppose i had better think about doing it then. just want to carry a spare. never know when one will go and i have alot of traveling to do this year in the old girl :wink:

Post by: denviks on February 06, 2006, 18:46:18: i do carry alot of tools in the back on the disco. full halfords pro socket set , pri bars and a whole tool box full :wink: . i dont leave home without them ( can never be too prepared :wink: )....when going long distance i also carry 1 axle stand. i wouldnt want to go far with the diff lock engaged. i know how exspensive it can get :wink:

Post by: Xtremeteam on February 06, 2006, 18:46:46: you can tell just by taking the wheel of normally,if it has a large domed end on the shaft its a 10 spline axle,if the drive flange is quite thin then its a 24spline

I drove mine about 200 miles when i lost the front cv..........had to strip it at the road side and clean out the broken bits and then drove home with 2wd only.

I drove mine about 200 miles when i lost the front cv..........had to strip it at the road side and clean out the broken bits and then drove home with 2wd only.

have a look in my gallery under pics,should have a pic of a 10 spline end & a 24 spline end (24 spline is a rear but should get the jist of it)

Post by: Richie_EB4 on February 06, 2006, 19:13:56: If you break one then it wont drive anywere untill you put it in diff lock to put the drive back to the rear wheels..........so if something breaks in the front then you dont get wind up on the road in diff lock.

You can tell which ones the rears are but the fronts are a different matter. I can't say off the top of my head but there's a mish mash of shafts between the diff itself and the CV. That's where the problems lie. The inboard of the CV joint.

You're looking at the splines on the shaft between the diff and CV joint.

Just to be a bit more pedantic... the VIN isn't enough. You need the VIN and the axle number to be certain.. and from that, you can get it sorted.

If you don't fancy stripping it down... PM me your VIN number and the axle number (stamped on the casing just to the right of the diff housing when viewed from the front usually) and I ought to be able to work it out for you ;-)
