Title: Help! Wobbly defender 90
Post by: Cassillis on February 09, 2006, 20:49:29
Evening all
The blue pig, a defender 90 1996 300tdi tin-top with 104,000mls, has developed a distinct vibration through the whole cab at 40mph along with a squeal whilst pulling away. The sound is rotational, if you understand what I mean, and seems to be central. My man in the know seems to think it’s the UJ at the gearbox end of the front prop shaft that is worn and causing this. Do you agree? Can I buy a UJ or should I replace the whole front prop shaft? Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Yep, UJ's and props make all manner of horrendous noises, if the front/s are really slack, you'll see the play when you grab it and waggle it!! If the prop is OK then just replace the UJ, get a good quality one tho, Hardy Spicers are good, and not expensive!

Yup, prop UJ is my guess.
Ive just had one go, which started as a squeal when setting off, then developed into a shiatsu back massage at 50mph.
New one only lasted 3 weeks before I destroyed it on the rock crawl at Frickley.

They are straightforeward to fit, to check, chock the wheels, h/brake off, car in neutral. Get underneath and holding the end of the propshaft next to the joint try to waggle it up down/side to side.
If theres ANY noticeable movement, its a gonner.
Repeat on all 4 UJ's
Replace the joints that are bad.

Ive just bought a Landy joint as a spare, theyre about a fiver each.
While you are under the car, measure the diameter of the UJ bearing caps, and the width of the UJ(across the flats of the bearing caps) There are 2 Landy size joints used, and you can bet they'll ask you the size.
Saves going back under the car doesnt it... :D

and if it is the UJ, change it sooner rather than later. Mine went on the Disco, didnt make any noise until it had been out of action for 2 weeks on the drive. It turned out the wear was so excessive it had worn the flange hole oval!!!

Needed a new prop at £100 or so to fix it....
