Much prefer older beatles, but this one is different - it looks like it goes like stink!  Bet its fun to drive on sand dunes or rallying through woods etc..!

Looks strangely like the original 'Touareg' derivative they used on the Dakar back in, must have been, 2002? It was called the 'Tarek' if memory serves.

Thats was a two wheel drive, 1.9 supercharged diesel, and yes, it went like stink.

But they decided they wanted soemthing more likely to win and hence the 4 wheel drive Race-Tourareg was born. And it's a cracker. It also has an off-roading heritage that stretches back to before Land Rover was born - surprisingly!

So, the new Baja gets my vote (unless it's based on anything related to the new beetle! IMV!).

They could have picked a far worse platform than the Golfs.. That Chassis is a very nice one.

Yep, and it's a very good car.

But, to my thinking, it's not in the spirit of the Beetle.

The Beetle was a cheap, low tech, mass producable car (Volkswagen = Peoples Car). The new Beetle however is a crass attempt to sell the Golf for even more money. It lacks the original ethos of the Beetle and spoils the practicality of the Golf. And the winner is.........?  :wink:

You can tell I'm an engineer!  :lol:

I applaud it as a concept.  Uses an established well-liked platform to create a useable, practical, modern, but silly car!

As a marketing exercise - spot on, bit like the BMW mini.  I don't want one, but if I had to have a Mini or a Beetle then I might be tempted by the modern cars! :wink:

I wouldn't have either... I'd take the 150bhp Diesel Golf :D

But I think VW did alright with the beetle, I'd take it over a Mini anyday...
