ok here goes,
a while ago i kept getting a noise every now ant then, it sound exactly like ...wait for it...someone hitting a tambourine!!!. i have had a look for loose itens on the engine etc with no look. recently it has progressed to a loud metalic whine, then it will dissapear and then return again.
it doesn't make the sound with the engine running/reving when stationary, when it is doing its opera spaz whilst driving, there is no effect if i dip the clutch, apply the brakes. as from what i can tell, it is not having any impact on the engine ie, slowing down, struggling etc.
could it still be the clutch, or what other areas should i investigate? unfortunatly the noise travels, so i cant pinpoint it, epecialy when driving. and it sound metalic.
any help appreciated

There's dust/stone covers on the diff pinions and at the t box end of the front prop. Has it come looses and rattling?

Stones stuck behind the stone guard on the wheels?
Bin the guard while you're at it if you intend to do a lot of muddy stuff.

U.J.'S!!!!!!!

had a weird rattling before but was quickly traced to the bonnet stay coming off the retaining clip

U.J.'S!!!!!!!
girt, silly question, how do you test the uj's or know if there shot. is it to give it tug to see if theres any movement?

Mine made a noise from the front.I thought it was on the engine.Turned out to be a U.J. A P.O had changed a UJ by removing the sliding yoke and when they put it back the front UJ was out of alignment with the rear one on the shaft.Everytime it turned they knocked against each other throwing the balance out.It set up a weird and wonderful noise.

I could be a wheel bearing about to die.
