Title: One modification too many?
Post by: Karen696 on February 17, 2006, 23:49:34
I have owned my landy for a year nearly, time for the insurance renewal....

First time I insured through Footman James, with Axa Insurance (who according to my usual broker doesn't do 'modified' landrovers).

All I was asked was to tell 'em when I had finished the additional modifications to make it into a camper, thats when I found out the modifications to make it into a camper equalled more premium to pay (they didn't tell me that when I started the policy) with NO additional cover for personal belongings etc, what could I do?  I coughed up more of the ready.

Of course, Bob also smashed my landy into the back of another car (boooo) wrecking my no claims on my landy and the city run around I also use.

So the dreaded day arrives and I get my renewal quote.  Of course I want some more competitive insurance quotes.  Well, so would you if the premium more than doubled!

4x4 insurance? Not if its a Camper!.....   that must be one modification too many....

On the plus side I do have some good news.... found a broker that could offer me insurance from an otherwise 'middle of the road' insurance company who are happy to insure my modified landrover, as a camper, with 2k worth of personal equipment coverage plus 1k's worth of geny, awnings etc coverage for a much more reasonable price than my renewal quote.

So, its £160 cheaper than Axa via Footman James,  and its loads, n loads more cover.

But, is my 'camper' so much more uninsurable than a landrover with bull bars, external rolll cage, etc?  I think not.

Happy with the cost?  NO, but happier?   YES

Adrian Flux (my heroes?)

I guess the problem relates to theivable stuff. The bull bars, roll cage, type of kit is not exactly the sort of stuff that can be run off with! It would only be applicable to the insurance in a total loss case.

Maybe they think it is more likely to be broken into. Just guessing.

Adrian Flux are always a good bet for modified vehicles. I had a fully race prepared MG Midget insured for the road through them and they were way cheaper than anywhere else.

Compared to most 'campers' my landy is pretty basic.  The real frustration was that the people who you would normally go to to insure a camper wouldn't touch it because it was a Land Rover.  Which is far more robust than most 'campers'.

Makes you wonder how the owners of ex-army carawagons get on doesn't it?

me thinks that if you were to take Bob (ooo where did that car come from) off the insurance you might save a packet

sorry Bob

101 Ambi converted Camper, £124 Fully comp limited milage, Sureterm.

No no claims accrument but it's been around the same for last 3 years (went up £20) this year as I declared it as a camper rather than the old Ambulance cover (not proper ambi..just pretend!)

I got my Dicovery, LandyBabes Range Rover & My Iveco van all with Adrian Flux.
With various mods and an extra 3points for speeding my cover on the Disco went up by £8-00 this year.
There recovery is pretty good to (speaking from experience)

Yep, unfortunately it is not something we can do.  There are insurers for camper conversions and those for vehicles modified for off road.  Unfortunately we do not deal with one that does both (or even one that does camper conversions).

Sorry I could not be of any help.

Well, I have now had time to try Sureterm as well.

Unfortunately because I have had two claims in the past 5 years - some b*****d nicked my car, and then Bob smashed my Landy into the back of that Rover, they can't beat or even match the Adrian Flux quote.

Looking on the bright side, the good news there was they could at least of insured it.

So I have rung Adrian Flux and parted with the plastic details.  I am not looking forward to the next statement.

Especially after that spending spree at Donington........
