Andy (& Dyfed) must be Admirals by now :D
Question; Why is it in Star-Trek (be it Next Generation, Voyager*, Enterprise*, or the Kirk original a Captain rank higher than a Commander.
Is it based on some Navy tradition???
*Jeri Ryan/Seven of Nine), Jolene Blalock (T'pol)...... Oh be still my beating heart :D
"Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated!" (if only  )

Star Trek is based (loosely) on the American Naval ranks.
Ensign, Leutenant, Commander, Captain, Admiral is basically the scheme. Deep Space Nine introduced the additional complication of non commisioned officers (O'Brian was a Chief Petty Officer) .... Basically they're a little guilty of making it up as they go along, and seem to favour naval ranks more than the others. Obviously the word "general" isn't as pretty as the word "admiral"
