Try unistalling Norton and doing a reinstall.
I had something similar but it was affecting emails via SSL.

Reinstalled and all was fine until the next time.

I was having loads of problems with messenger too
I was using version 7.5 and it would'nt log in or connect.
After loads of playing around i uninstalled it and i'm now running version 7 again.
Works a treat

Keith

Has this only just started to happen, if so and you are running XP roll it back to a date it was working

I used to have lots of issues running norton antivirus with updates causing XP problems
