Title: safe way to lift disco and work under him
Post by: LADY IN A LANDY on February 27, 2006, 17:30:08: Hi Guys, a little advice please.
I need to get underneath my disco i thought i would be able to wriggle under but one or two things got in the way lol not as much clearance as you think there is.Anyway are the drive on ramps the kind of thing you can get from halfords the safest way of doing this i dont need to take the wheels off and i dont like the idea of axle stands they look unsafe to me any thoughts please.
Also when i was having a look under him i noticed a thin black plastic pipe with a hook shape on the end it is just flapping around in the wind should this be conected to something it finishs about in line with the gear box but couldnt see cleary if there was anywhere to connect it.

Post by: thumbs on February 27, 2006, 17:45:19: drive on ramps will be fine for this, get a good set though, not sure what the halfords ones a rated too (weight wise)

that bit of pipe sounds like the transfer or gear box breather, it shouldnt be connected to anything, normally just cliped up under the floor out of the way. nothing to worry about if you dont drive through fords etc

Post by: Colin 009 on February 27, 2006, 18:40:16: What I do is with just two ramps, put one right front and the other left rear and just drive up onto them. be sure to chock the wheels still on ground.

Post by: thumbs on February 27, 2006, 18:51:48: thats a good way to do it, i must agree, when my disco was standard though i couldnt get my ramps under the cill to get the rear wheel up on to it.

all depends on what ramps you have got, mine are a fair size :D

Post by: Bulli on February 27, 2006, 20:48:23: Halfords ramps are fine. I often have mine on ramps and axel stands + hi lift to make accessing stuff easier. I ALWAYS back up the hi lift ...ususlly with the wheel thats off....
Or fit 35's ...i couldnt reach the rear suspension mounts to undo them the other day when it was on the ramps, LOL!!!

I've got Rhino ramps. Made out of plastic, but each rated to 12,000 lbs and they take a 265 tyre with ease. Not as high as the Halfords type, but more than enough to get under and have a tinker.

I got the Difflock ramps for Xmas - they are wide enough for 235s and I just put old car mats under the ramps to stop them skidding.

Best to have someone guide you up the first couple of times, but you soon get used to them.

Post by: thumbs on February 28, 2006, 19:50:03: i use trolley jack and axle stands most of the time, ramps are handy for certain jobs though, oil n filter, get under it to clean etc,

cant say my ramps slide forward, got a gravel drive (normally put 2 8x4 sheets down first though) always go up em with a bit of momentun in low with diff lock in, wheels should grip and climb rather then push away!

Err, it's a 4x4, it will pull the ramps under the wheels, like putting a FWD up forewards. If in doubt, stick the diff lock in.
