Title: power steering box leaking
Post by: oakeedokee on February 27, 2006, 21:41:55
The PAS box on my rangie classic is leaking from the sector shaft seal causing the steering to stiffen up erratically. Anyone know how big a job this is to replace the seal? Reading the manual would suggest a total strip down followed by a complicated re-build. Or am I better off fitting a secondhand box complete? What other bits am I likely to need if I remove and re-fit the box?

Have you checked the U/J's on the steering shaft between the box and the steering wheel,
if they are not cleaned and oiled that can also make the steering stiff..

Fit a scondhand one, loads quicker and you should get one for £30,although try and get one with a good drop arm attached.

If your going to remove the drop arm from the steerring box yourself, then you will probably need some heat. warm up the drop arm where its splined onto the streering box makes it a lot lot lot easier to remove.

An oxy-acetaline toruch works a treat, but I expect a blow tourch (butain etc.) would also work.

If you do decide to rebuild it just found this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Range-Rover-and-110-power-steering-pump-seal-kit_W0QQitemZ4607493395QQcategoryZ31348QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) on ebay, may be of some use to you

I can second that as i,ve just had my drop arm off to replace the bottom seal on one of my disco,s took a hydraulic puller at max to shift it with a little bit of heat to loosen the loctite

When they strat to leak from the output it's probably worn so new seals won't last that long either. Time for a recon, they are £99 from Paddocks plus your old one, that's obscene

£99 sounds quite reasonable to me, I thought it was going to be a lot more.
I know what you guys mean about getting the drop arm off - the last one I did took 2 days, wrecked two pullers and only finally gave way when I lost my rag with it and beat ten sacks of 5h1t out of it with a lump hammer  .
I've got another box sitting on a donor vehicle at the moment ready to come off, but are there any seals I will need to replace when I swap the hoses over or anything else that might need changing?

For a box swap, you should be ok, although check the top pipes for any O-rings that might need changing, got caught on that one once, but no great deal

Thanks folks. Started to take box off and found lower UJ siezed which isn't helping matters. I say it's the lower UJ but looking through the manuals I think my steering shaft was fitted upside down - on mine the rubber bit is at the lower end of the shaft, whereas in the manual it suggests it should be at the top. Any ideas on this one?

Thanks wolfie. Managed to insieze UJ by hitting it back and forth with a lump hammer for twenty minutes  and all seems fine now albeit the steering box is still relieving itself all over the drop arm. A job for another day!
