Title: Opinion please
Post by: Richie_EB4 on February 28, 2006, 17:23:11
Hi guys

First thanks to all that replyed to my other post.

I keep snapping 10 spline half shafts (200tdi Disco)........so iwould like to know if the 300tdi (24 spline) are any stronger ??
I can get full axles to swap over so its not a problem but is it worth it ?

Thanks

Thanks Paul

There are one or two that say they are no stronger and even more expensive to replace if they do snap.

How do you manage to do that, they are fairly tough items, not managed it on any of my permanent 4wd's yet, cant say the same for the lightweight though

They are a bit stronger than standard 10 splines, but not much better than an uprated 10 spline, plus there is the cost and the issure of wear on the 24 splines that is starting to show in older cars.  One thing is, toughen the shaft, what will bust next?

Thanks for that..........i have only used second hand shafts to replace broken ones but they have had no ware or twisting on them so would have expected them to last just the same as new ones.
I have had LR's for years and seen them break but just not as much........with running the grizzly claw's they do have so much grip that i do understand something has to give..........will probly put the 300 axles on and see how long they last.

wouldnt it be easier to get some heavy duty 10 spline shafts?
Easier to fit than new axles, you know theyll fit with no grief, and they are gonna be better than 10 or 24 spline stock shafts.

Either that, or go a bit easier on the skinny pedal and stop breaking the stock ones......

You don't say whether it is front or rear that you are breaking.

Generally 24 spline stuff is considered stronger, but I guess that at least part of the reason that they have that reputation is that on the whole the axles and components are newer and have done less work.

The biggest problem that I think that you have is that you are using s/h 10 spline shafts.  All 10 spline s/h stuff is quite old now and alot will have had to work hard for their living.  You won't necessarily see that wear in the shafts, but they could have twisted considerably over their length during their lifetime.  One way to see this happening is to paint a straight line on the shaft and look to see what state it is in when you next have the shaft out.

Breaking transmission is a regular problem in the high-speed off roading field and there are loads of different approaches to the problem.  Some people use strengthened shafts, peg the diffs, use only four pin diffs if std, or uprated diffs and cwps.

The other camp is to use new or low/light mileage units and 'life' them. i.e. replace them after a period of time before they let go.

I have a foot in each camp.  The rear is a truetrac diff with good s/h cwp, and s/h ashcroft 24 spline hd shafts.  In the front I have a 24 spline std 2-pin diff out of a late series 1 discovery, and std shafts and CVs, which I am currently replacing for brand new genuine units.

I think that when the Ashcroft shafts in the back let go I will probably replace them with newish std ones again.

Hope this helps - another different view I am afraid - my option would be go for the lowest mileage 24 spline axles you can get and throw them on and forget.

Thanks for that Henry Webster

Its more the front half shafts........the one that comes from the diff to the cv.........its a pain to do so was looking to change both axles.
I see where your coming from with this info and it makes sence.

Many thanks.
