started to unbolt the steering box today and found the support bracket had broken at some point  as shown in the pic anyone else had this?
-
Not managed to do that yet  , talk about famous last words
What do they say, this will only take x amount of tiem, until you get something like this
-
Its called 'testing to destruction'. I have witnessed many such Land Rover drivers doing just that ;)
Was there any symptom with the breakage before you removed it??
-
Looking at it they are rather weak just there aren't they?

for those interested i dismantled my steering box today to see if i could locate the cause of the roughness it failed its mot on :? having removed the sector shaft no joy so removed the worm drive and there it was, the race the small bearings run on had lost its surface integrity and so the little balls were offroading as it were on a very rough surface which was causing the steering to be rough and notchy. the big pic shows(not well i admit) the race on the shaft where some pitting has taken place right at the end of the arrows, the other end was worse

broken a few steadys on the racer, thers a heavy duty 1 that doesnt have slots but i prefer the slotted 1 so not to damage the box
