Its a good question. Some chaps on here have 'developed' a removable cover that slips over the valve when you are planning a bit of a paddle

You can make em out of the right size yoghurt pots (ask davidlandy) apparantly

I'd just seal it up, ideally with a metal disc the size of the outlet;  I've done it on both Discos and it didn't cause any problems at all.

makes no difference to mpg - its there amongst other things to let all of the dead flies out that get sucked into the air intake - give the little tit a squeeze and out they come!

I made a cover for it from an actimel bottle!  works  - exactly the right size!

The only problem i found was you do get a small build up of moisture when its cold or sucked in through the top etc and needds to be drained off every now and again.

i've not sealed up mine on the disco and she went fishing with no problems [1].   Wading regularly (every day to work through a 2-3 foot deep river), mud plugging and everything in between

[1] I did a 5 foot deep river - a week later I found a fish under the bonnet!
