Post by: bezzabsa on March 07, 2006, 18:53:55
seem to recall these were based on a landy engine.....can anybody else remember this? just thought at that price wouldbe worth a look for a source of spares.

Its a VM 2.5 TD. Almost the same (same, but tuned driffrant) as fitted to a RRC before they put the TDI in at the factory.

Rover fitted that lump to several motors.

SD1 was another example.

They are not too bad in a RRC. The one in mine runns well enough, doesn't use oil and no worse in a straight line than a 300 TDI defender. And thats just the 2.4 TDI

The origionals were no turbo IIRC and not very good is probably the understatment of the month. The only noticeable problem with the turbo is lag all the way up to about 2250 rpm.

I'd steer clear in future, I was nieve when I bought my RRC with 2.5 VM fitted as standard.

I replaced the head gaskets twice in 5 years and replaced the pistons and con rod bearings. Recond the Turbo.

Other than that I think on paper they were the better engine than the TDi.

I would only steer clear because of there reputation to blow head gaskets which is probably down to the head bolt needing retightening at 40,000 miles. Someting which I doubt gets done by many hence the problem.

Otherwise a cracking lump. 30-35 plus MPG all day long.

Towing was teadious but we have a v. big caravan.

I sold mine and got a cacking return trade in so mustn't grumble.
