The mother-in-law is wanting a new car.
At the moment she's using our 'spare' (the Fabia)
Even though she's 'knocking on' (still a few years on the lower side of 60) she wants a 'Sports Car' :? (as she puts it)
I reckon something in the Renault Kangoo genre ( the forthcoming similar Skoda perhaps?) would be better for her?
She's seen
Mazda MX-5
Volvo C-70 (the convertible)
Hyundai Coupe
Father-in-law has plans for a Stag, or MGB instead
My suggestion was (of course) something built in Blackpool
But absolutely scariest of all, she like those B*W z-cars :(scared):
How do I talk her out of one of those things???? (apart from showing her th price)
I'll have to simply tell her they're only 2-seaters (she reiterates that she needs 4)
-
Audi Cabroilet
Pick up a nice 2.8 V6 for a reasonable price, and its still a reasonably sensible car.
BTW the Kangoo is a van ;)
-

Just tell your father-in-law to go out and buy a Stag without consulting mother-in-law and worry about the consequencies after the event  . Thats what I do - just turn up in a 'newer' car and SWMBO can either like it or lump it
-
If she wants something new and sporty (for sensible money) how about one of these.
http://www.mk-sportscars.fsnet.co.uk/indy.htm
Best bit is that there out of the same mould as the lotus severns, so should appeal to the father-in-law as well.
However acess is not the best   , so you might end up having to drive it instead
-
What about a Saab turbo?
-
Just nippedinto Wakefield & called into Harratts (Volvo dealer), there's a new convertible coming out next week (S50, or is it S40???), but it looks like a Focus on steroids, but then again that series are Focus based I believe?

Showed her a RS4

We very seriously considered the Kangoo (or whatever the 'MPV' is called) before buying the Fabia.
Sliding doors make sense for shopping/old-folks

I like that plan :D
The 'Old Star Garage' at Collingham (near Wetherby) has/had a MGB GT-V8 in stock :D
The owner has a secret passion (http://www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=55&ArticleID=1121866)

Theres an RS4 Cabriolet due out in a few weeks I beleive.
Nice solid reliable car though, most of them stayed based on the same Chassis as the 80/90 and its a proven design. They dont rust and just a nice drive.
Also the only Audi they ever got the steering right on  Always biased too much towards power assist or towards not having it.

As long as they don't mind 3000 mile service intervals and rust repairs every few years  And don't buy a rubber bumper one, they handle like beached whales! They have 'back seats' but don't expect anyone to actually fit in them! Also, the boot is rubbish. You struggle to even get a suitcase in.
I had 2 1800 versions back in the 80's. Both chrome bumper ones. Not bad GT cars, but not at all 'sporting'. The V8 was marginally better, but don't expect it to beat your average modern hatchback away from the lights!
Of the current crop of Coupe's I particularly like the Nissan 350Z. Very nice car, and should be reliable too.

But it's got a V8 & what can you do to V8's.
Anything :D

Not bad looking, I also like the (still fairly' cutting edge') look of the Celica.
I did also drop a copy of 'Classic American' on the father-in-laws lap :D
Let me see..............
65 - 68 Mustang
68-69 Camaro
69 - 70 Challenger
69 Charger. Oh yes.................... :D
-
do what i did at one point, think what is required of the car (eg, air con, cruise control, leather interior, convertable etc.. ) and just search around your budget price on auto trader, you may well find something you never thought of before!
...its how i found my old astra (mk4 1.8 16v sport - grp 7 insurance) for bargain price! :D
-
Audi Cabrio sounds a nice bet... Solid cars, I have a mate with an S2 Coupe and it's a seriously quick car, especially as it only runs a 2.2. The 2.8 will be a bottle rocket.

Mother-in-law is an 'image' person (or I think she is)
It's got to look good
At one time she used to tell us; "I wouldn't be seen dead in a Skoda"
But now the joke's on her, as she's realised what a damn fine car it it &drives about in it.
Mine isn't a 'Classless Iconic Vehicle', classless as in, it wouldn't look out of place on the farm, on the high street, at the source of the Amazon, the African Veldt, at the Lord of the Manors country house, etc......
She reckons it's a 'Farm Truck' & I'm not a farmer so why did I buy it? The Discovery was deemed alright as it was (reasonably) posh & 'countryfied', but where was the picnic-hamper??
(Stereo-)Typical woman
Ladies on here excepted from that last comment
-

What about a Discovery then? She can add a picnic hamper to her own if she really wants too

:) :) See sense...best current car on the market is the Skoda RS and it's relatively cheap...build quality is up to Audi's and it goes like stink...you know it makes sense...
Bye now
  Billy no Mates

It does to me as well, I'd try & replace the Mondeo with one, if SWMBO was up for another lease car yet.
What about a Discovery then?
She still likes them & they looked at a Td5, so what happened??

You could persuade her to go for a modern 'stang or Charger then?? :D Not the same, but not too shabby
-
The new Mustang is gorgeous... I'd still take an RS4 though.
-
Sports cars are a pain to get in and out of. The RS4 are monster estate that think they are a sports car. All the Skoda range are excellent cars.

I took a type A RS4 out a year agom took days to get rid of the grin :D
RS4 is no a Saloon too :)

Bought the wife an MX-5 last month - bought one for myself this month! They're loads of fun, good value for money, reliable and economical. IMHO they are what the MGB should have evolved into - not the sqashed-up Metro that is the MGF.
An MGB with decent suspension, power steering and electric windows, that isn't rotten/full of filler. The hoods take seconds to put up/down - Electric ones are great, until they go wrong - it's bad enough when they get stuck open, but when it's halfway....
And you can get turbo kits which give over 200bhp.....

There's a new shape Mustang at our Hospital & it features in the 'Mischellaneous Automotive' pages of my WebShots

Now then,
On my list would be;
New Mini Cooper (S), cheap compared to some "sports" cars and fantastic residual values, if you use the H.P. arrangements with balloon option you can sell after one year and even make a profit!!
Skoda Octavia VRS, what can I say. Fantastic car. I run a Superb 1.9 elegance myself and can vouch for the build quality.
Finally Golf GTi or Audi TT. Super chassis and back on form after a few years of boredom.
My father has an RX8, bit fussy.
Merc CLK? Really poor dealer service. Friend recently bought a CLK and went to Germany to pick it up. Did the factory tour then was shown his new car - totally wrong model! OOPPS

Not a lover of these, did you know it's got the same wheel-base as the original Range Rover (100"). Not really a Mini is it??

Well we've got a Fabia, have tested a Fabia vRS& like it.
A while ago (before Superb was announced) they produced a concept car.
The Tudor (http://www.skoda-auto.com/global/showroom/concepts/tudor/), essentially a two-door Superb, it looked superb (no pun intended)
They've been to look at MazdaMX-5 & up to the 'Old Star Garage' at Collingham today & have seen a MGB -GT & a (re-shelled) '72 Midget.
Now if that was in production it'd be short listed
My father has an RX8, bit fussy.
Like the Suicide Doors (even though they're not proper ones)
-
Now the Tudor I like.
No good for us though. Our Superb is used as a chauffeur drive car. Massive rear legroom, leather everywhere and power everything. A8 quality at Mondeo money. Skoda all the way for me. Even my customers (mainly H.M. Government!) like it.
The Mini is a cracking little car. Handles so well, it just keeps turning in!
Saabs 92 is due soon isn't it? Same size as a Subaru and lots quicker. Still a G.M. though.
I'll think on.
-
i think u should off give her your disco 50th and not sold it lol :D

Its a 2.0e. Quick and cheap to insure. Loads of history(near full). drives mint!
3 series are for chavs !
Audi's still have class. We have a merc and this is as nice.
It is not as new but VERY good !
PM me for more specs ! :D
