Title: steering problem
Post by: spy on March 12, 2006, 17:58:24
I just bought me my 1st disco!  Got it on ebay last night, j reg 136k mot til october £1000 :D

There is a problem with it tho....  Steering gets lighter and then goes heavy again.  Its sort of notchy?  Feels like a knackered steering UJ on the old fiestas.  Is there a UJ on these or is it box or something expensive?

Any ideas anyone, is it one to fix or is it back on ebay with it?

Thanks,

Mike

There are 2 UJ's in the steering shaft... pop the bonnet and you should be able to see them on the left (as you look from the front)

Could be something as simple as air in or low on power steering fluid.

The uj might need some WD. Mine stiffen up after a bit, dry mud allso can this.

I have wd'd the UJ's and it seems a bit less stiff now.  The fluid is full and no visible leaks.  The only things i have found are that the drive belt is slack as anything (both of them are) with rounded nuts - typical land rover!  Also the ball joint on the bottom of the drop arm is absolutely bladdered.  Could this be part of the problem?

Ordering the ball joint in a minute and will have a go at sorting the belt tension out tomorrow....

Fingers crossed!
